I knew I didn't like that worsted cloth

I've lamented for several years that the worsted cloths offered by Simonis and Granito though superior cloth wouldn't be my cloth of choice on my home table. I've had slow Mali cloth on my table for over 10 years. And I love it.

I feel that I have to be in good stroke to get the ball around, especially with blended draw shots. So, I was very pleased to find out that the IPT had selected Mali cloth because it is slower.

There are reasons why I have not particulary embraced the worsted cloths, one of which is that I think it's so good that you don't need to have a particular good stroke to do things to the cueball. That is, it's easier to adjust to, say, Simonis 860 from shooting on heavy Mali then it is vice versa. At least, that's what's happened to me. Going slower is tougher than going faster.

Oddly enough, I bought some Granito Basalt about 4 years ago, I think. And for some odder reason, I went ahead and re-clothed my table with it this weekend. Before anyone questions why I did it myself, I also had another project I wanted to do with my table: make it sturdier. My table is the cheapest of the Kasson line, and has single piece 3/4" slate, no backer. The cloth is actually glued on. Greg Sullivan suggested that to make it sturdier, I could add a plywood backer to it. So, with sawdust a flying, I added a 3/4 inch plywood nailer onto it. This meant I also had to trim other parts to get the height right. And, since I had the whole table apart, I changed the cloth. I also added another shim to the pockets trying to make it play a little tougher.

First of all, I'm not a table mechanic (though I have recoverd tables before), so this was my first experience putting worsted on cushions and adding a shim. Suck. Now doing it once, I think I know what to do next time, but there won't be a next time for me probably. The long and short is that I did recover the table, and though not professional, I've seen worse. Note to self: remove the crappy shim that's already there and start anew.

The play: terrible. I mean, too perfect, too easy. The speed is so much faster that every shot is shot at bunt speed. This is fine for my slow speed tuning, but I almost never have to stroke anything with gusto. Here's a shot that is now almost a gimme. I don't feel good about it. My stroke isn't so good that this shot becomes simple.

Now I know how Kinnister shoots that long draw shot out of the corner on The 60-Minute Workout.

I'll have to get out of the house more often, just to get on a slower table.

Ugg! An to top it all off, the new cloth is brown. Muhahahaha;)

Funny thing is... mine really is brown. Camel, I believe they called it. I don't know how my wife talked me into it.

BTW, I believe only the Wei Bartable has tan cloth.
