I love my OB1 !!!

I've been a long user of Predator 314 and recently I was offered a great deal to try the OB1 shaft.

First, I must admit that I've been around the "OB Guys" - Royce Bunnell and Don Owens many times and they are the friendliest and nicest people around.

I tried out the shaft about an hour and it was enough to convince me to play the tournament next day with it. I am not technology savvy or even attempt to understand why OB1 works this way and 314 works that way. I just know it FELT RIGHT:D I liked everything about it.

Oh, I also had some trouble keeping the 314 ferrule clean, (for some reason, chalk stained the 314) but on OB1's wooden ferrule chalk didn't stain the ferrule.

I am now an OB1 user!!!

Who out there have tried BOTH shafts and which one do you like better?

I have tried both OB1 and Predator 314 / 314-2 and the z shaft .
My fav. hands down is the Predator 314-2 Just my opinion .

Thanks ....... Larry

I knew that someone had posted a same topic before, not becuase I did a search... (I'm sort of challenged in that matter too) but OB1 is soooo awsome, I'm sure many people posted their testimony.

So, sue me, bite my dog biscuit, jk:grin-square: But can I just make one thread about something I am really excited about?

By the way, that original post was about a year ago, when the OB1 Shaft was fairely new to the market and I don't think many people knew about it or used it.

i've tried an OB-1, but I didnt like the hit. It felt almost too soft. I have been playing with a 314 for 6-7 years now, and both the OB-1 and my 314 had moori mediums.

now i play with a sniper on my 314, and it feels softer than the moori, but not "pillowy" soft like the OB-1.

Good post here-its long but a good read.

i have a OB and loaned it to a friend, a female pro, she loved it, we put it on a light butt and it fit perfect, just perfect like it came out of the shop where they re-face the parts so it lined up the diameter was spot on as well, the but is a 2 piece break jump cue. She came to Visit Jay while he was staying with me here in Vegas, she didnt bring a cue and the break cue with the phenolic tip was on the butt the shaft just happened to be laying there so they put it together, i wasnt there, I was sleeping over in my house.

When I woke up I called Jay and he said they were playing, I never keep cues in my poolroom here because they might disappear, I fely bad because I have 2 junk cues out there, Jay siad "were fine we put a shaft on your break cue" OK i suppose that would work. I went out there and brought the Gus that I awalys let Jay use when he comes to my house. So I walk over and there she is using my break/jump butt wit ha OB shaft on it, and was playing great, I bought it for a Barry Szam just to try it out I wasnt ever serious about it, I never could control the rock, it was fun to watch all the english I culd put on the rock but I never knew where is waas gonna stop.

I had this problem with 2 or 3 cues I put it on. This lead me to believe it wasnt for me, J. Schmit who I consider a friend and 100% respect his game told me it took a while but he likes it, He didnt say that B/c he had to because of the sponsership. He meant it-I could tell he wasnt B.S.ing me-given the circumstances of when I asked him. It just wasnt right on the Szams I used it on and one other cue I cant remember.

BUT.......When they put it on that break/jump butt, it was perfect, the balance of the cue, the taper-my OB had a real long taper. Everything was right about that cue, I could play with it no problem, it would take time but it was great, I loaned it to her b/c she might go out on tour. I said if you stop using it send it back, Jay vouched so I let it go.

Long story because i'm practicing my writing, but the point is the butt is as important as the shaft, OB's can suck or be great depending on the butt, there is alot more to it than just judging the shaft.

LOL, it's about to get worse guys.

I have a OB-1..... and I also have a 314. So what makes this story get more argumentive; my 314 is a Varney modified one. So how does it play, the Varney that is. I can spin the Sh*t out of the ball. So much more as a matter of fact that when I use my O-B1 I am thrown off. But I believe the modified 314 ferrule added to the end mass a little bit and sacrificed it's original deflection rating. But does this mean I like it over the OB-1; no. Over all I like the feel of the OB-1.

But here's where it get more interesting, I shoot with a 60" cue. I've used a standard 58" cue from the first time I picked one up, until about 2 and half years ago. I convince myself at that time that my 76" reach deserved a longer cue. But I think shooting with the longer cue really adds more deflection. So in other words I really regret getting the longer cue because i constantly dwell on convincing myself I need it.

So to sum it up I only wish I could go back to the days when I had a standard 58" Predator 314 Sneak Pete. Then I could truly give the real test. Back then I didn't know why I even had a 314 I just wanted a Sneaky Pete that played well. I love the feel balance and hit of my 60" Josey with my OB-1, but wish I could have what really low deflection hit and feel is like.

So what did we learn here....I don't know i just felt like typing something. You the one that read this whole thing.

Happy Friday everyone!

I don't have the "sticky film" problem with my shaft, so I'm not sure how to go about handling that:sorry: . Contact the "OB Guys" by phone or pm them. They have forum accounts here.

Thanks for the practice, but I already have a GREAT BUTT   I just added a better shaft for it.

I'm going to assume you're talking about what I found on my first OB-1 - it was covered with... well, something. It wasn't very noticeable 'til I put on my glove (which I don't use anymore, so there nyah) - and whatever it was on that shaft caught the cloth of the glove as I would stroke. It was like hundreds of teeny bumps on the shaft.

I just whipped out my trusty Q-Wiz pad, and went to town on it. Took the stuff right off.

If that's not what you've got going, then I dunno what to tell you. :/

I think it's just a sealer. I used 800gr sandpaper while spinning the shaft (on a drill, i'm lathe challenged) to take it off followed by 2000 and 4000, 8000 to burnish. After using the 800gr, I wiped down the shaft with a damp cloth. By holding the shaft up to the light, I was able to see where I may still have some spots with film on it. (the wiping down with a damp cloth made it a lot easier to differentiate between an area with sealer and an area without.

I've been using 314-2 for about 2 years. I picked up an OB-1 about 8 months ago but didn't give it a fair shot. I picked up another one a few weeks ago and I'm absolutely loving it. I haven't picked up the 314-2 shaft since. I can play well with either shaft, but I definitely enjoy playing with OB-1 a whole lot more. As it stands, I'm shooting with a predator sneaky pete butt and an OB-1 shaft. It's really working for me.

I enjoy both the OB-1 and the 314-2. I play the 314-2 on the steel joints of my Schons and Mezzs and the OB-1s on big pin sticks. I truly believe that the OB-1 with an ivory joint and big G-10 pin has a superior feel and hit. The one I keep coming back to is a forward balanced Steve Klein.

I never missed with the ob-1 (15-0)

Since Danny Janes made the butts- I think they will play best on Joss because of the balance issue. The first time I hit a ball with the ob-1, I banked all the balls in playing 8-ball, then I just through out the balls and made about 7 in a row before the talisman tip went flying. It was a demo, I replaced it with a kamui and returned it. I like the partial for matching collars. It was a 3/8-10 like schmidt uses. thanks to troy koinnkid, mark
