I love this drill

another good drill is to spread them out a little more and play the same way but u cant touch a rail with the cueball either. makes it a little tougher.

Have you ever ...

tried the ROLL-a-rack where the balls are in a big circle
with the cueball in the center, and you have to pocket
the solids or stripes all first, then the others then the 8
ball? It is a real challenge too, and you have to keep
the cue ball within the circle all the time. They have
contests of this to see who can complete the rack without
missing.

Great Drills...

A friend showed me this drill recently and I've become addicted to it. The object is, starting with ball in hand, to pocket the balls in any order without missing and without the cue ball contacting any other object ball on a given shot (no combos either).

I shot this drill so long last Saturday that my feet starting hurting and I had to take off my shoes! LOL

Mary,

This drill is from the Pro Skill Drills Book/DVD...this set is full of great drills...this is Drill #20, they call it The Grid...it's tough! Check the link, they have some of these being executed on video...

a good stroking drill

the drill is that you place a ball about an inch from the rail along the long rail on the first spot from the corner. You start with the cueball on the second dot and have to make the OB in the corner and draw all the way back to the other rail.

Then each time you set it back up you place the CB one diamond farther away from the object leaving the OB at the first diamond. Each time you shoot you must draw the CB all the way back to the far rail AND pocket the ball. Any time you miss or don't draw the ball all of the way back, you must start over.

Eventually you will be shooting an eight foot shot and have to draw back another eight and a half feet on a nine foot table. When you can go through it first try consistently you can stroke pretty damn good.

Here's an interesting variation

This is begun with CB in hand behind the headstring. No contact is allowed with any OB after pocketing a ball, no combination shots, and the CB may not contact a cushion at any time. I've used this for many years. My best result ever was two times plus twelve balls on the third setup. Worth putting some time into.

Where to start? and slightly different version

Mary, where do you like to start? And how often do you complete the 'grid' without missing?
In your layout, I used to start with the 9 or 10 ball, meaning the center ball of an end row.
I think I ran out the first attempt or so, but probably couldn't finish 10% of the time.
I'll have to start trying again!
This is the version I recall.

I've only played for a year, and only started this drill last Saturday - my high run at the moment is 12. My average is improving, and I really do feel like it's helping various aspects of my game. The real point is that it's keeping me shooting, because I'm enjoying it. :)
That's the ticket. Make your next run 15!

good luck!

Welcome Mary.

Howdy Mary. I'm kinda new to this forum too, but it's always a delight to see drill threads. There never seems to be an end to them. It makes playing alone at home much more fun and practice too. The drill you posted reminded me of a drill I have to attribute to the Monk. In his book "The 8-Ball Book" (page 41), the following drill is shown. He calls it THE NITRO.

QUOTE from "THE 8-BALL BOOK"--
"Here we have 13 balls lined up on the diamonds. Each ball is filled with nitroglycerin. You need to avoid hitting any of them, except to pocket the object ball. If you pocket the object ball and the cue ball hits another ball, you will explode like an overfed puppy."
