I Played a Hall of Famer Last Night

So, Nick Varner has been out and about here in the Northeast for a little while doing business, and has managed to wander into two different rooms I've been playing in. Last night, one of the guys I play with, who has the gift of gab, talked Nick into coming over and trying out his cue, which turned into him trying out my cue, and my friends wife's cue. Anyway, we ask if he wants to play some, and the three of us took turns playing him for the next 3 hours. Between the three of us we won 1 game of 8 ball out of probably 25 or so, I'm proud to say I took the win, and had the opportunity for 2 others, but those Diamond tables robbed me. His game isn't a flashy as the Philipinos, but there weren't many situations he didn't handle with ease. That little guy breaks like a freight train too.

Nick was truly down to earth, friendly, and a pleasure to play with. He's playing on the IPT, and I'll be cheering him on. He was acutally quite positive about the IPT. He's out traveling looking for distributors for his new limited edition cues, so if any of you are in a position to help him out, I'm sure he'd appreciate it if you try to contact him somehow.

We took some pictures on my friends phone, if she can figure out how to get them to me I'll post them up.

Nick has always been a gentleman both times I played him we made a game that was fair (10-6) and he seems to really love the game. He still comes around to Akron University once or twice a year to give an exhibition.

You played pool with one of the all-time great players. Nick is an enduring credit to our sport, and, at least to my knowledge, is the only player to have won world championships in each of 9-ball, straight pool, one pocket and 8-ball. Nick is, quite simply, one for the ages.

Nick Varner is one player I've never heard a negative comment about. Everyone seems to like him. I'm rooting for him to win some big money on the IPT.

When Nick was in Mesa AZ the week before Xmas I went over to see his Magic. He is truly a Gentleman, talked openly about his techniques, the IPT, and how he does what he does with a Cue. He is IMO a Magician with a Cue. I was not one of those who got to play him, but watching him play was well worth the trip to Mesa AZ...

I've seen inexpensive Nick Varner cues for sale, can I assume this is a new line of cues? Does he have a website?

Varner's new Cues

This is a new line of cues, I think he said they'd be ready to ship around June. This isn't going to be inexpensive from what I gathered last night, we're talking middle of the pack custom prices. He's going to hand sign each one, it was designed by him, and they will come with cases, not sure what kind. The cue will come with 2 shafts, wood to wood joint radial pin, and that's about all I know. His website is www.nickvarner.com

I agree with what everyone has said on here about Nick, a truly nice person who loves the game, is still very good at the game, and a genuine class act.

Nick Varner at his best was THE greatest all around player for a long period. Titles in one pocket, 9 ball, 8 ball, straight pool, and banks don't come easy!

Efren Reyes said Nick was the smartest player alive, and never came with the wrong shot.

Not too shabby, eh? The little Grinder! The Kentucky Colonel! The Nick Varner!

Nick said about his own game that he always plays the same way whether he's well ahead or well behind. That is so true about Nick. Other player's game will change under these two circumstances. Normally, for the worse.

He told me some stories of matches where his opponent was well ahead fell apart, and when his opponent whom he assumed would fall apart didn't.
