I went down to Indy and looked up willie at his house Friday. First of all, let me say, what an excellent setup! By far the best table in a house I've ever seen, even though I definitely need more practice to play well on a shimmed GC. The tacos and pie were pretty good too :D

ok, he beat me. there, I said it. my official excuse: bar table player + shimmed GC == one big mess. Next time I'll respect the table a bit more :)

Thanks again for the game, Don. I'll be back sometime (gimme a couple of weeks to recover, at least).

Tuh  , "I'm not playing much for a few months" + house table + AZ Matchup = porky pies! :D

I know that "lost at sea" feeling you get from being a bar table shooter to a tight 9'er.

Let me just say that Steev is too modest. It was pretty obvious that he is the better player; I just had a little bit of the "homecourt advantage" - there are some shots that are just not likely on the double-shimmed GCIV that would be a piece of cake on a bar table.

Steev is DEFINITELY worthy of inclusion in the pantheon of AZB pool fanatics. We played for 7 or 8 hours, and I enjoyed every minute. I really have no one in Indy to spar with, so it was EXTREMELY enjoyable playing with someone so dedicated to the game. You are welcome back anytime Steev (unless of course, you are just spying for breakup, in which case we may have to poison your food:) ).

TheHalfofTwo,
Okay, I DO practice every day that I am home; but I rarely play. I do have an occasional game with a pro, but that counts more as racking practice than playing. My last match with a non-pro was March 2nd.

Okay, now you can explain what the hell a "porky pies" signifies (and why is it funny or insulting or both). I think most of your readers on this side of the pond are mystified.

P.S. - I also wish you guys would quit calling the trunk of a car a "boot."

Pory Pies = Lies )cockney slang)

OK don't mind calling it a trunk if you stop saying Math! Its Maths, eg short for Mathematics!!! eg Plural!

TheThirdofaFew,
Now, now. Lets think of them more as semi-delusional rationalizations aimed at soothing a bruised sense of self worth when confronted with the harsh realities of limited physical skills and practice time (rather than "porky pies").

P.S. - and please stop driving on the left side of the road - it's just wrong.

did you say double-shimmed? i knew something felt difficult...now I don't feel so bad.

/i really thought it was only shimmed once!

Steev,
The standard table has rubber "caps/shims" at the end of each rail; therefore is "single-shimmed." If you add one shim to each cushion end, then it is "double-shimmed" as mine is. Triple-shimmed is just stupid (like the "Jaws" table at Airport Billiards).

What games did you guys play? 8, 9, one pocket, straight? If you played a variety, did some games produce a closer match up than others?

MT,
We played 8-ball, straight pool, and 9-ball. They were all very close - Steev plays STRONG (I think I heard some rumor about him being 2nd in the state VNEA this year - but since I don't know ANYTHING about the bar leagues I'll leave it to him to divulge the details). I was very lucky.

it was 4th in the B div...not much to talk about i guess. all i can remember about it is the two shots i missed which lost matches for me (i'm talking about 95% shots here...sad). anyway, thanks for clearing up the terminology on shims :P i guess i'd just call your table 'shimmed', as the 'single-shimmed' you refer to is the standard. either way, it's a lot tougher than i'm used to!

i didn't mind losing at straight pool, but i'm a little mad that i didn't win _one_ set of 8 or 9 ball. it was really interesting to watch a straight pool fanatic play 8 and 9. it reminded me that you need to play everything to be good at something in pool. i think if we'd played one-hole on that monster i would have broken something in your house ;)

WillieTellPorkies

How can you say that, the Romans built our roads 2000 years ago! :D

When the Romans built the roads 2000 years ago they built in wagon ruts in the center of the road, not the left or the right. This is somewhat significant because wagon builders had to standardize the width between the wheels, this has impacted societies around the world in way you couldn't possibly imagine. For instance the size of the booster rockets on the space shuttle where limited by these ruts. The reason for this of course is the same people that built wagons, started building rail equipment when trains were invented.

The standarized width between the wheels of course was the width of 2 horses butts. :p

Very educational but I think you blew my left side of the road excuse hehe (Willie wouldn't have spotted it!) :D

Funny how that horse butt analogy seemes to keep coming up in Williebetmore threads.

breakup,
"Funny" is not the first adjective that came to mind; I think "pathetic", "feeble", and "sad" are the adjectives most people use when describing your posts. Fortunately for you I've decided not to resort to such juvenile attacks on the forum (though I haven't ruled out armed confrontation, identity theft, exotic poisons, and small thermonuclear devices). In fact if I was just one foot taller and 100 pounds heavier I'd kick your a$$.

For now, I think I'll just practice my pool game. If you can find someone to read this post to you (I'll bet you regret now not developing any reading ability during those 3 long years in third grade) perhaps they can remind you of the extreme penalties you will incur if you lose the DCC match. One large bag of sand, avatar for a month chosen by me, forced to agree with all of my posts for one month. Perhaps you should be practicing instead of fabricating fanciful lies about me.

Funny, but not nice.

Sore-one,
Reflecting on this, I think you are right. It was NOT nice to insult the Alaskan second grades like that - they should never have let breakup get to the third grade with such woeful skills. I should have avoided mentioning this sad fact.
