I won the Lag

At APA league this week the other team had a new player whom never played a single match in APA. I recognized him, and thankfully the league operators correctly set his skill levels to 7/9 as his Fargo is 700 range. I don't have a Fargo but know I'd be around 450-500. I knew all I could do is damage control, avoid the shutout, and take away a point.

I won the Lag, so he didn't get a Rackless, HAHAHA! From there he won all 5 games, only taking 4 innings. He got an 8 ball beak, break and run for the mini-slam. I did get on a run that was the closest I got to winning a rack. Missed my last object ball on a tough full table cut down the rail that frankly I was surprised I even got the leave on to attempt the long shot.

We managed to get some points off him in 9 ball by throwing a 3.

Felt like I was on the wrong side of some sort of record debut for a player... I heard another pro player Fargo 730 had also started a team. I can't image what would compel these guys to join. There's plenty of other more competitive leagues and money tournaments in our area. Trip to Vegas, that you end up paying of with league fees?

I didn't know that pros are allowed in APA
I think there used to a rule about it back in the day when I played.
And yes, a 700 Fargo player is a pro...

A 700 is a real good player but they're not pros. To me 'pro' means capable of earning something resembling a living. A 700 will be able to make decent secondary $$ but not as a main source. APA doesn't go by FR iirc, they have their own system. Nothing in their by-laws covers 'pros'.

If I remember correctly, and that was way before Fargo, you weren't allowed to play in APA if you played in a pro event.
Might have changed, it was like 30 years ago.
Today with FargoRate, it should be a lot easier for the APA to set a bar of a Fargo rate that above it you can't play in APA.
APA is for amateurs and it a stepping stone for people to get into the world of pool, you don't want to discourage them by letting players that shouldn't be in it.

Agree 100%

I am in a unique position in my Rookie year, so to speak. With APA that is. 🤷‍♂️
My personal goal is to set an example. In the local league the Sport is the goal. Sportsmanship makes for a successful evening.
Not sure of format or handicap method and I prefer to stay that way. 🤷‍♂️ I just Wanna Have Fun.

save this for facebook where all the other apa nits tell these stories. I beat someone 5-0 in apa with 3 break and runs and an 8 ball on the break. Im a 7/9 but far from pro . Some nights you got it .

no.. no it’s not lol not even close. Your a really good amateur but you’ll be lucky to even sniff the cash let alone win the tournament

apa doesn’t care about Fargo. They want nothing to do with Fargo. They care about money. If you pay your nightly dues you play.

this would be a good point if the only person to get paid in a tournament structure was the top spot. APA skill levels are influenced by the ability of the other league members, but it seems to cap about at anywhere between a 525-600 Fargo. Your "pro speed" players would still be a 7/9.

There's always someone to rush to the defense of this broken league any time it's mentioned on the internet.

700 is closing in on journeyman status, which I'd put at starting at 730-740 approx. A journeyman would be someone capable of placing half decent on a good day, but not winning pro international events. Those 30-40 points do not come easily. The top pros are now over 800 and some up to 850...Those 100-150 points are HUGE. The top 100(!) players in the world are all over 790 currently. There has been a sort of inflation of Fargo points recently and journeyman status may now be in the high 700s. I've known some low 700's who have placed in the money in Eurotour and the US open, but that time may have passed.

A 700 fargo player would be well advised to become an instructor or salesman if he wants to make a living in the pool world, cause he's not getting fat off tournament winnings, that's for sure.

APA needs to extend the 8ball SL to at least 9 like 9 ball. A 550 SL7 vs a 700+ SL7 is going to get murdered every time... I know SL7's that are barely 500 Fargo. In a Fargo rated tourney that 550 would get a 3 game handicap.
