Identify this cue with "W" logo?

What the heck, while we are talking green McDermott cues, we can get a little more serious, here is my 1975 MR2 A2. I would be embarrassed to say how little I paid for it, well under $100. Here is one on eBay: LINK Ferrule is dirty but condition is otherwise spectacular. Notice the green bumper. They had red, blue, yellow, and brown as well. I have a couple others with the brown bumper. You think KU bumpers are hard to find? Find me a blue McDermott bumper.

Don't know if McD have a museum but if they did this cue would belong in it.

Basically one of their first cues.

Thanks. I consider myself the steward more than the owner. Since it sold cheap, I also might have rescued it from some banger and a life of misery and destruction.

A little more interesting history relevant to my claim that mine is a 1975 and not a 1976:

I do believe it is a 1975, not a 1976. Officially the McDermott brand began in 1975, but Jim McDermott made numerous cues before then. I have examined exactly one cue before 1975 that was claimed to be his work from 1972. I have no way of knowing if that was actually a McDermott or not. It had no features of a McDermott and in my view had many features of an Adam cue. In the late 1960s, Jim met master cue maker Rollie Welch and worked with him for several years learning cue making, culminating in the first McDermott brand cues in 1975. It is possible he used some Adam parts to build a cue before launching the McDermott brand. I just don't know. He did use Viking parts in at least the first two McDermott branded cues.

In 1975 he started the brand and labeled the cues. I have spoken to a man that grew up next door to Jim McDermott and am still in touch with him occasionally. We talked a number of times on the phone. He had seen my posts on AZB. He and his father had the first and second McDermott cues ever made. The first one is lost to history and several years ago he had the second one for sale which I posted pics of in this thread. It's an amazing window cue that looks more like a very fancy Viking of the time with vinyl veneers because it was built with Viking parts as many cues were at the time. Incidentally, the original owner said the cue was made in 1974, before the known first series of McDermott cues we all know so well.

I recently ran across that cue in the background of a sale on eBay, so I figure the seller bought it. The price started at $12k, then when I last communicated with the seller about it, it was down to $8K. Apparently it did sell, but I don't know for how much, but I am confident it was not cheap.

What is interesting is that the picture I found has a green MR2 A2 right next to it. The difference is the wrap. After examining (and buying) a number of early McDermotts it seems to me the wrap changed. These cues were made in 75/76. I believe the earlier cues have a wrap like mine, and the later cues have a wrap like the cue I am about to picture. It is shiny like nylon, orlon, rayon, or something like that. My wrap is softer and not shiny, more like a cotton blend but not like linen.

Incidentally, this early "A" series construction was the mainstay of McDermott construction, including the weight bolts and bumpers, for the A,B,C,D, and E series cues and transitioned in the EK series. Early EK series have the old weight bolt and bumper, while later ones have the later weight bolt and bumper.

This is a cropped version of the picture I found. The second McDermott ever made is on the left, and the 1976 version of the same cue as mine is on the right.

I do not claim to be an expert. It's just my considered opinion after examining numerous cues as well as pictures of cues that mine is a 1975.
Could I be wrong about the year of my cue? Absolutely. I could always be wrong.

I love sharing all this and discussing it with people that are interested.

What you have is priceless.

Guess you won't ever have to buy another McD. This one is going to be hard to beat.

As little as I can get them for. The prices get ridiculous.

The McDermott Budweiser AB-01 cue is harder to find and came with a matching case.

This is an example, it sold for $260 8/28/2018. I should have bough it. But I really wanted one cheaper. I am a bargain hunter, but honestly, that was a fair price, especially considering condition.

thanks. I'll keep my eye out for one now. I thought all those McD litho cues were crap. Did know that some had value.

They are regular US made McDermott cues, so they are pretty darn decent as cues. The graphics have novelty value.

You can have a McDermott made with whatever you want on it. They have an order form on their web site with instructions to submit the graphics.

EDIT: Not all the McDermott novelty cues are US made. The two I posted are. The Superman cue and case set for example is Asian made McDermott.

Found a guy who just sold one (a few months ago) just like this with the case for $150. I'll keep my eyes out.

That's the kind of price I am looking for. Not over $200. I don't think it's unreasonable. That one I passed up was in new condition though. There have been others, that's just one record I saved.

Funny how prices go. I hate and avoid the value issue. It's the same with customs, Funny how prices go. Value is such an ethereal thing in such matters.

I have this cue and I can't find any information about it. It appears old.

I can't find this logo ANYWHERE in all my searching...
The cue appears to be pretty old. Here's the reasons I think that:
    • Yellowing of the wood.
    • Rubber bumper was pretty old, (splitting as I tried to remove it).
    • Shaft is "conical" shape like the old cues.
    • Inside under the bumper, looks very old (not including what appears to be a replaced weight bolt).
    • Non-CNC inlays.
    • 13.3mm tip
Here's the basic stats:
58" (I would have thought 57" if it was super old)
13.3mm tip
conical shaft that appears to be original
"W" logo on the butt
Sharp points (not completely even)
The weight bolt almost certainly appears to be replaced. It just seems much newer than the rest of the stick.

What do you guys think? Does ANYONE know anything about this cue stick? I don't have any further information but can attach additional photos or take additional measurements if you like.

Adam has, or had a line of cues called William, and some of those just have a W as the logo, so this might be a an Adam / William cue. Any any case though, this is clearly a very cheap quality Chinese import. Very low quality.

I've made it my mission to find a cue that you value but don't have at a cheap price! LOL It would be a source of pride with me if I could actually do it considering all of your vast resources! 👍👍👍

If I do find one of these "Budweiser McDermott" cues at a really good price... I'll offer to you for cost if you like it. You've done so much for this group, everyone should be showering DEALS on you to add to your collection/estate/database/knowledge!!!

PLEASE!!!!... commit your knowledge/database and leave for everyone in your Will! I know... you're going to live FOREVER! (but just in case you get hit by a buss). That would be too big us loss for us to take. Kind of like when the last speaker of a "native language" dies.
