If you can't play sober, what makes you think you can play drunk?

Yes, I never ever play drunk. But again, I can't seem to play without at least one or two in me (obviously, depends how long I am playing). As tim913 says, buzzed.

I hardly drink at all outside of pool.

I am going to give you a straight answer. Might help, might not.

I once drank to excess, and well past it. I made a lot of money on pool tables because I was using a pool cue to keep from falling. One reason I favored house cues, I was afraid of snapping my cue at the joint as I had seen happen.

I didn't play a lot better or worse hammered, what I did do was play differently. Like most things, once I realized this I studied my playing style drunk and sober. Drunken style was easier and had more potential. Still being quite young I tended to cowboy a bit when sober or mostly sober. When I was drunk and lazy I used the minimum effort required to get out.

After I paid attention to my game for a few weeks, getting drunk purely as a matter of research you understand, or if the sun went down, I realized I would play my best pool if I played the same style as when a sixpack or three into things, sober. I tried it, it worked.

I suggest a designated driver and pay attention to how you play when drinking and sober. If you play better drunk it is probably due to a change in styles. Try to notice stance, stroke, shot speed, everything about your game. It is a myth that anyone has to be drunk to play. May take a little learning but playing sober is more rewarding.

Chemical enhancement was something I imbibed in often while playing. Especially for those long ass matches that drag on into the wee hours. It's hard to stay Frosty.
Thank goodness I've moved away from that line of thought, bcuz I do play better sober now. Period.

Where i play most players drink ,one guy got pulled over about 2 blocks away soon as the cops noticed the cue case in the back seat out came the breathalyser he got charged impaired driving.

I used to drink. I don't know that I'd say "a lot" tho there were times, of course. I probably posted in this thread from back when it started, I'm not going thru the whole thing again. ;)

What I found was that I'd probably be a better player if I had one drink, on a league night. Mostly because I'd have been working all day and likely had a bit of stress before landing at the pool room. One drink would usually loosen me up and I'd be more relaxed. Stress doesn't help anything.

But neither does too much alcohol.

I stopped drinking just over a year ago. I won't say that my game has gotten better, because it hasn't. But that's not the fault of my being sober, it's a variety of other factors, sigh. Yes, there are still nights where I think that I'd be more relaxed and likely play better if I had a drink, but it's not a good option for me any longer.

The trick with alcohol is moderation, and that's never simple. (Which is why I'm not drinking any more.) I've seen many folks play unbelievably well while unbelievably drunk. That doesn't work for most folks.

If you are talking about women....you may get lucky more often....but in the morning you'll have second thoughts on your selection.
No big deal, everybody needs a little Lovin, just don't go back for seconds. Worked for me then, would probably still work for me if I was in the same situation as back then. Those were some interesting times, ha ha.

if you think you play better drunk or buzzed you are wrong. you may hit some shots better as you may be less nervous but your thinking is impaired so you wont play the table properly for your true speed.

We normally play on weekend afternoons for 4-5 hours. I would have 3-4 beers nothing much just to loosen up my back. Moved to water about 4 years ago now. Took me some time to feel better about playing stone sober, but i got there. Turns out stretching is the better solution.

Now i might have a drink once in 10 sessions. If i am in good company and feel like socializing.
