I'm thinking about buying a custom cue

Poollshark

Balabushka or bust
I'm new to pool but I love the game. They just put a new table in our rec room but all the sticks are crappy so I want to get my own custom cue. I was thinking about getting a Balabushka, I watched The Color Of Money and I figure if it's good enough for Tom Cruise and Paul Newman then it's good enough for me. Anyone have any idea where I can pick one up for a reasonable price? I want the real deal, no imitations.

Thanks,
Teddy

Reasonable price and balabushka are two words that cannot be used in the smae sentance... unless you want one of the new imported versions!!!

First of all, what you need to do is separate fiction from fact. The Color of Money was fiction. Tom Cruise and Paul Newman are actors. The Balabushka was "the" cue 40 years ago when Fast Eddie was the Hustler. Today it's an expensive collector's item. The "Balabuska" cues of today are commercially made cues made by a company the bought the rights to use the Balabushka name. They are no more like the real Balabushka cue than hotdogs are like a steak.

At this stage of your pool playing career, what you need is decent playing commercial cue of average dimensions, say, 19-20oz. Use it for a while while you find someone to give you lessons (there are several good instructors on this board). Then, after you have some idea what you are doing and what you like in a cue--a year or two from now--then it would make sense to think about a custom cue. Right now it would be like ordering a custom suit and not knowing what size you want it made.

As for what cue to get for now, you can't go wrong with a Lucasi. They are reasonable, well made, and play unbelievably well for the price.

Oh, and BTW...that cue was a Joss, NOT a real deal Balabushka!

Honestly, no offense, but educate yourself before you post.

This is like asking where can I purchase a real deal Aston Martin, or Bentley for cheap.

the forsale section here on the forum has many custom cues at many great prices for sale everyday... i am sure you can find something there for a decent price.. other then spending 8 thousand dollars on plain balabushka..

For instance, I just saw a Troy Downey for sale there for $300. That is a great price for a good playing cue.

If you watched Color of Money you would have heard the line "That guy died 10 or 15 years ago, you know what thats worth" And this is from the Mid 80's. Obvious original Balabushka's arnt being made anymore.

They do pop up for sale every now and then, but I have never seen one for under 6000. Then shoot with it? No way, to me that cue is a safe queen, just sits in a safe, looks pretty and collects value.

Hell every hit you take with an original bushka you are probably knocking 10 bucks off the worth LOL.

Teddy,
A Bushka in good condition without any MOP inlays start around $7-10K. I have an orginial that could be yours for only $20K range.

Not sure if this is a "bait" thread or not but Ill bite.
I have about a dozen real nice "starter" cues for sale at reasonable prices. PM me what you are looking for and Ill see what I have to offer.

If you really want a custom cue, and you buy a plane-jane from the right builder, and if you take care of it, the cue can retain its value or even appreciate in the secondary market. Of course, you won't really know what to look for until you poke around for a bit with comparison shopping. :)

P.S. you're looking at $300 minimum, and probably higher for even the simplest custom cue of top quality.

i say if its just for knockin em around at the local rec room go ahead and get a bushka, and maybe a couple rubberbands to hold it together when youre carrying it back and forth from you car

Definite "bait" thread. Real deal..no imitations...for a reasonable price. Thanks for the laugh.

A great starter cue is a Players. They play decent and can get them for around $50-$100. If you want a better one you can get a Lucasi. Those are the best value for the money.

If your looking for a higher end cue then Meucci, Joss, McDermott are some excellent choices.

Now if you mean Custom cue as in one you had customed ordered then I wouldn't do it. I personally feel custom cues are a waste of money. Unless your doing it for appearence or collectors reasons. I've watched a 1pocket world champion play with a Meucci. Johnny Archer plays with a scorpion. And Allison Fischer plays with the dredded Cuetec. All of which could beat the living tar out of me with a house cue. The only difference is they often will have an aftermarket shaft. Many you can pick up for $300-400. So $300 stick plus $300 shaft equals a $600 stick that plays just as good as a $4,000 custom.

How can you compare a cuetec with an aftermarket shaft with a $4,000 custom? With the exception of a Barry Szambotti you're any custom that you get for 4G's is going to be damn fancy and you don't order a cue like that for playability alone. Now your statement would be somewhat valid if you used the $1000-1500 figure. Furthermore, you can get a decent number of nice playing cues from quality cuemakers for the $600-700 your suggesting.

That being said, I would suggest that a beginner start out with a Joss or Lucasi or something similar in the $200-400 range.

Don't worry Zeeder. I agree with you. I just felt I would bring some of the custom worshipers out of the woodwork. Especially since he was referring to buying a Balabushka. The "Real Deal" Balabushka.

Also wasn't the Balabushka used in "The Color Of Money" actually a Joss Model 7?

I would agree that the proper choice would be a nice production cue to start out with. McDermott makes a great cue for the money.

Now that said I don't see why you knock customs. A Taurus will get you from a to b but given the choice I think most people would rather drive an Aston-martin. I don't think that there is one person on this board that would pick a Lucassi over a Joel Hercek for example. Now I realize that not everyone can drop several thousand dollars on a cue and there isn't a cue out there that can make you a better player but if you've got the extra dough and it makes you happy who's it hurting. Just my opinion.

BTW I don't have a Hercek or a Aston-Martin but I sure would like to own both someday.
