I'm thinking of quitting league:suggestions?

What is it that you're looking to improve? Shotmaking, position play, safety, or strategy? Have you considered spending your money on lessons?

I'm just curious what is your level, and have you checked the pool halls for leagues, and week night tournaments? You mentioned that 2 day weekend tournaments are not feasible, so what about a week night tournament. I think there is a difference in attitude and skill level between bar leagues and pool league players. Not all leagues should be lumped together.

@ calired This is exactly what I'm hoping for! Please read on as I respond to Red Shoes. Thank you for posting.

Where do you live? There maybe a regional tour or weekend event that is close by.

Maybe you can find some other like-minded folks to meet once a month somewhere close. You could have mini tournaments among yourselves. We've done that before, and it's fun!

Some good ideas here Jam. I'm about 40mi. Sw of Chicago and there's plenty of tournaments so that's definitely an idea. Unfortunatly, I don't 6 other likeminded people that I currently play with. Kinda sad :(

@ Whitewolf Having the guys over is a great option, just kind of limited on people about my speed that I can actually trust enough to have in my home. I'm a sl/5 in the APA, just to answer your question. Thank you for posting

I play once a week in a local scratch league. Great competition and the cash stays local. I get to compete with higher level players and the cost is reasonable. And our pool room gives us free practice time.

In this economy, I like to support our local businesses.

That sounds like a good thing you got going there. Thanks for posting

I had a bad taste of league so i am all for not playing....Weekly tourneys are the way to go now...whenever i get the chance too that is...lol

Weekly tourneys would definitely help me to handle pressure and are affordable. I might start playing in a Friday night 8 ball for $5. Thanks for posting

@ red shoes Just the guy I was wanting to talk to! Funny you should respond. I live in Joliet and the pool room 25 miles away I was referring to was yours!lol! That straight pool league sounds awesome. I've always wanted to learn the game. I plan on coming up next weekend for the bank pool tourney( to watch of course) maybe we could talk more then.

I scuffled for years, took road trips with champions and usually ended up with little to show for it. You get known and end up playing against tough action at the bars. You waste a lot of time and money.

If you're looking to take your game to the next level, take the drive to the pool room. You can get a game for a dollar or a dime. There are a lot of players who will welcome your game and you will find tough action without all the grind.

Save up and get your home table. Spend some time with your family. It goes by pretty quick and you don't want to miss anything.

Best,
Mike
I do have a home table that I play on daily but perhaps putting aside some money to get it worked on would practicing alot more enjoyable. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my thread

If your local bar only has one pool table, why bother then? How could you even get your own table to play someone on? You need to drive the 25 miles and work up some partners games with the pill pool bottle. Lots of woofing would make it fun. The 3 ball game is super fun, but you would have to disallow SL7s. But, I am an SL7 and I don't do well in 3 ball because I have a lousy break. I have seen SL4s clean house because they can make 2 balls on the break starting off. You will just have to keep the really good pool players out.

In my area driving 25 miles is NOTHING. I drive everywhere to be in tournaments and just to watch. It's all relative.

In answer to your first paragraph, I'm looking to improve on all of the above. I have taken a lesson and I have plans for taking more. My current skill level is an APA 5. You make a very valid point there about not lumping in bar league with leagues at a pool hall. Thanks for your thoughts and I'll keep this thread updated and let everyone know what I decide.

Well...pooladdiction, I didn't realize "yall" was from my area. Our Monday night Straight Pool League should be right up your alley. After you sign up and the new session begins...you have to play every other player in the league. You play them 2 games. "IF" you win both games...your handicap goes up...loose your handicap goes down...split they stay same. The cost is $20 (total per night). At the end of the session you get $5 for every game you win. Plus we pay out 1st thru 4th (sometimes more depending on the number of players in that session) on total "wins". Handicaps go from 40 (low end) to around 200 (high end). Also I do a Wednesday night 10 Ball Tournament (handicapped-double elimination). Entry is $15...tournament starts at 8PM (practice FREE from 7PM til start)...the house (me) addes a little money also....so it is OVER 100% payback. Every night Red Shoes has all the "big dogs" in the area playing. On any given night you may have a couple of "Hall of Fame" players, A occasional World Title holder, a bunch of past APA, BCA and ACS Grand National Champions....not to mention the "action" (which is what we are known for). If you need help with your game...I'll introduce you to "Professor" Eddie Latimer...He loves to teach (& knows what he is talking about). If your coming to the Bank Pool Tournament, flag me so I know it's you and we will get you started. See you soon.
