Remember, "easy" does not always mean easy. I've made those great shots only to follow up missing on easy shots.
Hopefully knowing the how the distance and angle the OB is from the pocket effects accuracy and the size of the impact zone will help someone know when it is best to try a cheat the pocket shot.
Mostly, how important it is to have hitting the center of the pocket as the standard for a successful shot, unless you are cheating the pocket, then is is how close the OB came to going into the pocket where you wanted it to. Followed by using center ball on as many shots as possible.
To me, close is not good enough in pool. It's not like the saying, "Close enough for government work."
It was doing these drawing a while back that help me. I never really understood the geometry of shot making, even tho I was spending alot of time at the table.
These concepts are aiming system independent. Another way to put it, these concepts are in all aiming systems, not just GB.
How have these helped me?
Well, I know how much area of the OB I can hit based on the OB distance/angle from the pocket and the CB angle to the OB.
I now sight 90-95% of my shots starting from standing behind the OB and then moving to the CB location. Knowing how much the CB contact point moves around the CB based the the CB/OB angle, helps me gauge when to stop.
One thing thats gonna sound silly, but remember the balls are round. I labeled the center of the balls as contact patch indicating the bottom of the balls. Well that center could also represent the center of the ball, as some people do, or also the top of the balls.
So, take a stripe ball and place the edge of the stripe at the contact point on a OB. See how the edge of the stripe runs around the ball. Now, imagine if that stripe was able to contract or expand as the angle between the CB/OB changes. That is another way of thinking about when the CB contact point rotates as the CB/OB angle changes.
Notice that the OB contact point never changes. It is the angle between the CB and OB that matters. This is how one can say that the pocket location really doesn't matter, however it does in terms of distance and angle of the OB/pocket.
These concepts are in all aiming systems cause how you get the ball there does not matter to these concepts.
As well as all shots.
I hope inexperinced players will find this stuff useful. These drawing are just a way for me to study and practice away from the table. None of this info is really new, I just put the information in a format that makes sense to me.
In the spirit of the people that passed info along to me over the years, I'm just doing the same.
