Improve your one pocket game with IPDE

Hey,

This can be applied to just about anything that requires a decision and has
multiple options, but I find it extremely helpful in one-pocket.

IPDE - this is an acronym going back to my high school days...In Drivers Ed
class, it was used to educate beginning drivers on how to handle multitudes
of traffic situations.....works nicely for one-pocket too!

Identify - Predict - Decide - Execute - a thought process for each inning at
the table.

------------------

Identify - At the beginning of your inning at the table, identify all valid
options and different shot selections.

Predict - For each shot selection, predict what the results will be.
Predict where the object balls will end up. Predict where the cueball will
end up. AND... most importantly predict what you will be leaving your
oponent (this is paramount!) You do not want to leave your opponent an easy
way to lock you up or give him a nice power shot to move balls. You must
be aware of this and recognize these situations.

Decide - Weigh your options and choose the right shot. Take into account
your ability to execute and which shot selection gives you the best desired
result

Execute - Execute the shot as you visualized it.

Try it sometime!

Zig Zag, Your logic is impeccable - Now, all we need is a robot or a super human to employ it ^_^ .....The problem is, 95% of one pocket players don't see all the shots, particularly the most advanced/best shot....and, we have to constantly make ourselves have the patience and the discipline to shoot the correct shot....but last of all, unfortunately, most of us don't have the god-given talent to execute shots like Buddy, Efren, and Cliff do....Oh yeah, and banking like Eddie Taylor or Bugs used to, wouldn't be a bad little addition to your one pocket game either ^_^

I think most of us unconsciously follow
that system. By the way, Ghost, still
waiting to hear about Southern writers
or was that just a strange joke that I
wasn't smart enough to catch?

hondo,

you are right, most players do follow this automatically.

This post was really geared toward the neophytes to the game. Many times beginners ask me what I think about and what I look for when playing one pocket.

This process is what I describe to them. It gets them thinking the correct way and to look for other options.

Hondo, It wasn't a joke - You haven't heard what i wanted to say because i wanted to communicate via private message or e-mail = ghosttown@ync.net - Contact me if you want to.

shot selection ...

When time outs are called and I am called over to coach (quite frequently since I am usually the most experienced and many times the best player on the team).

I voice different options that I see to the player and possibly the merits or drawbacks for each alternative shot, tell them the shot I would select and why I would select it, and then I say,

'But you take the shot that is the best shot for you because you know what you can do'.

This way I am pointing out alternatives with certain advantages for each, telling them my shot selection and why, and then letting them decide based on their skill level and confidence.

Many times they shoot the shot I recommend, but some of time they will select another option because they feel more comfortable with it for their skill level. And on some rare rare occasions they will shoot something different than any of my options, and that really tees me off .... <just kidding>

I only shoot them if they miss or sell out the farm ... I have got to get my team turnover rate down .... <grin>

Ghost. I've emailed you twice at address
you gave me. Hard to tell who's getting
those messages. PM me or look in my
profile for email address. I don't seem
to be able to pm anybody for some
reason or other.

Hondo, I don't know why, but i haven't received your e-mails - i've received e-mails from other forum members at that e-mail address with no problem....The only reason that i didn't pm or e-mail you, is that in your forum profile it says that you don't accept pm's and your e-mail address is not listed ???....By the way, are you going to Louisville for the DCC ?
