In need of a lesson

Seeing that I am new to the board I'm not sure exactly where to post this so... Here I am.
I was hoping that maybe someone could direct me on what direction I should take in in finding a pro to take a lesson. I live in NJ and would like someone close by.
Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

Two players that come to mind in the New Jersey area with a proven track record of quality instruction are: Jose Garcia and Tony Robles.

Tony can be reached at Amsterdam Pool Room in NYC, and Jose Garcia has a pool room located in New Jersey. Maybe somebody on this forum can provide the contact info.

They are both gentleman, and if you've ever seen them play, it is simply awesome. Two great choices for lessons (IMO).

Tony Robles is fairly well known for his teaching too. I read a few good things aboot him

Tony Robles will not only teach you but he'll support you , entertain you, and be a role model to you. Tony's popularity is well deserved. Amsterdam Billiard Club phone num is 212-496-8180. Go for it!

That's fine. Just trying to get an idea. Thanks again.

i don't like giving out pricing info for other people as its their business, so i'll just say this, tony is very fairly priced. he's a little above what i've seen as the average for instruction. some people are higher and some are lower. being in new jersey, its definitely worth the drive up to manhattan.

tony is a great guy, and a great instructor. if you want to find a pro pool player that is a great instructor tony is the man. as sjm said, he will also support you, i've never seen someone get so excited when one of his students tells him how they did in a tourney or something. its very hard to find someone who is a great player AND a great instructor. he's BOTH.

thanks

Teddy Garahan is also a very personable pro. I believe he's in the process of moving to upstate NY to run a room, but for now he should be at Crown Billiards in Franklin Lakes. His website is www.propoolteacher.com

If you're working on your straight pool game, Jack Colavita is a legend and can be reached at Comet Billiards in Parsippany.

That is a really cool website of Teddy Garrihan's, one of the nicest I've seen for a professional player (IMO).

Having just recently been to Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ, this is a player's dream pool room. The equipment is maintained to the highest standard, and the tables are actually spaced 7 feet or more apart, giving the pool player plenty of room for play.

There are many excellent choices of instructors on this thread. Whoever you end up going with, you're going to be in good hands.

Jam,

I live in the Detroit area and would like to find a good instructor. I am thinking of going to Denny Stewart in Milan, OH. The problem is that it is an almost two hour drive. Has anyone had experience with Denny and how did it turn out?

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'm going to go with Tony. He sounds like the type of person for me.

JAM,
Your right.. Comet billiards is a excellent room. Played in a few tournaments there. Very open, well taken care of hall.

The best pool instructor in the tri state area is a guy named Todd Fleitman. He teaches out of NJ, but I can't remember what room. If you are serious about learning, then he's the guy for you. Every student he's had has shown incredible results. He will teach you something one week and if you haven't practiced it, he won't give you another lesson... as he puts it he won't waste his time or yours. I've observed many of his students jump 2 or 3 (or more) levels in less than a year. I've always wanted to take lessons from him, but haven't been able to make out to Jersey. He gave a 4 hour seminar I attended and it was absolutely amazing. I learned so much in that 4 hours.

If you're interested, you can contact Todd via the tri state tour

He used to teach out of West End Billiards in Elizabeth, although his wife just recently passed away so he may not be available just yet. But if he is, you won't be disappointed with his instruction.
