Indexing For lathe

I need to be able to index my lathe and plan to modify it for that purpose.
I have found two basic concepts and would appreciate opinions.

One is to drill indents into the backup plate.
And the other is to add a plate behind the back up plate.
What are your thoughts?

What, in your opinion, would be the optimum useful number of indexes?
24 - 36 - 48 - 72
 
My first thought would be a separate plate between the chuck and the face plate. Of course, you would have to fashion an index pin, and mount.
Give Chris Hightower a ring. He owns Cue Man Billiard Products. I know he has done some lathe conversions. :)
 
I never scrolled down the website that far, did not know there was a section dedicated tot eh cue makes.
