Info on a new defunct tour?

In another thread on this forum (Danny Harriman’s thread on Pure Pool) a commenter had said how he wished there was a game that was "something like bowling and golf where you play against the game and not an actual opponent ."

Another commenter responded that there used to be tournament or maybe even a tour like that years ago, but it ended up being a flop. Does anybody remember anything about such a tour? Did they play 3-ball, golf, or something else? Any thoughts on why it didn’t catch on? Would it do any better today?

Thanks for any help. I’m new here on the forum. As my handle suggests, I like to play 3-ball. Work and kids schedule make it tough for me to get out to the pool halls as much as I would like, so I play a lot of 3-ball on my home table and keep a running tally of my scores. Kind of lets me compete against myself.

check out http://www.behindtherocktour.com/ , it's similar scoring to bowling and still going. It plays 9 ball or 10 ball.

Sounds like you want 14.1 continuous to make a return.....

I'm not sure about the tour you're looking for, but if you're looking for a pure offense game, you should try pool 300. Pool 300 is a game Don Owen came up with a few years back. We developed it all the way a working league here in Dallas. It only lasted for a couple of seasons, but it's a really great game. It seems like it would be easy, but it's pretty tough.

Here's a link to an old page with the rules.

When I first read your post, EQUAL OFFENSE immediately came to mind;

although I don't think there was an actual tour for it.

Just looked at the BehindTheRockTour website. Has anyone ever played in one of their tournaments? What did you think?

I've played quite a few times and enjoy it. Takes about an hour to an hour and a half to play. it's handicapped so very possible to get a payout frequently. I find it a great way to work on my run outs and keep track of how I'm progressing.

As user AtLarge said, Mike Page has a really excellent post about the difference between head-to-head pool games and those that are based on a scoring system. (IE, lowest number of strokes in 3-ball, highest run in 9-ball, etc.) The post is here: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showth...02#post5173102

It got me thinking about the differences. A big one is that games that involve a scoring system don’t really require playing safe. Don’t get me wrong, I like to play 9-ball, but there are times that I don’t because to play it really well there needs to be a certain level of safety play. I fully recognize that learning to play safe is a skill that should be admired. I probably would like safety play better if I was a better safety player. But still, I do make some good safety shots from time to time, but they don’t provide me the same level of satisfaction as making a razor-thin cut or pocketing a nice bank shot.

Is it bad that I feel that way? Do others feel that way? Do you sometimes just want to play a game that doesn’t rely so much on playing safeties?

To me, pool is a war game.....
...games involving just you and the table may be good practice routines....
...but for them to replace healthy competition?.......
....is like going to a strip bar for your sex life.

No, maybe, playing it safe for the next shot, like a lay-up, yes, to answer your questions. Safeties as in a defensive move to retreat because no offensive shot is available is the tactic that those other games use – like in jostling; it has been around forever, where, taking the opponent out of the game is the objective.

Having now looked at the links herein, I find it amazing having not been aware of these other formats and your quest (questions) for that skill of shooting pool to be measured, is, and has been alive for a long time, I like it. So much so, this 4Ball format that I’ve been developing really does fill the void of the larger table play by way of making the most of the 7’ table, and an 8’, for measuring your strengths of speed and touch on those bank & cut shots, 4play is a way to roll.
