Inner Tennis: Playin the Game
By W. Timothy Gallwey

A friend of mine said that this book was great and it really helped his game. Has anyone ever read this and if so what did you think?

I've read the Inner Game of Tennis, which I assume is similar. Far more worth while than the typical "mental" babble and BS you see from most pool authors. I think Fancher's book is also good. Be warned that you might not feel comfortable with the way IGOT will ask you to respect your opponent, but it will be good for you in the long run.

yOU SURE IT's NOT

The Inner game of Tennis? I read it a long time ago and Yes, it is a big help with the psychological part of the game. I had been thinking about getting it and reading it again. Sam:)

it's good and well worth the read. only negative is he's using tennis in a lot of his examples obviously. but a very good read.

pleasures of small motions is amazing also. buy them both now! all the pool knowledge in the world doesn't mean a thing when you are struggling mentally - you'll never be able to put all your abilities and knowledge into action.

I have heard from a lot of decent-great players that this book is one of the best reads.

I've read it and have browsed back through many times. The concepts of letting go of self-judgement (you're not playing good or bad, just playing) and programming to your mind using images rather than words: Its all good stuff and worth some consideration.

i read this book and it was definitely worthwhile on getting your concentration working for you and quieting your mind.

I own it, have read it several times, and I'm still a psychological train wreck. Of course, this could be attributed to my reading comprehension skills.

I've heard it's a good book though. ;)

Have a copy and if I start getting my game together again in the future, I'll read it again. The part about watching the ball goes well with George Fels's idea of watching the cue ball once the shot is on it's way. Did wonders for my concentration, when I could remember to do it.

Mental Toughness Training for Sports-I read this at about the same time, and it's good too. Out of print, I'm afraid, though.

The author of the book also wrote several other "Inner Game of" books, but I believe The Inner Game of Tennis was the first. I have read The Inner Game of Golf and I didn't think it was nearly as good. If I remember correctly, Timothy Gallwey actually did play tennis. However, he wasn't a golfer at all and The Inner Game of Golf, in my opinion, read like a guy trying to apply his theories to a subject that he was totally unfamiliar with. I suspect his other "Inner Game of" books might be similar in that regard. I only mention this in case you happened to see that there were several "Inner Game of" books and weren't sure which one to buy.

Not according to Amazon which is where I bought it. Hope it’s the right book lol. :D

So from all the post I gather it will apply fairly well to pool.

To all those who read the book did it have any adverse affects on your game? For instance did you find your self trying to incorporate the lessens in the book and throw your sell off?

Hi,

Like any pool lesson, it can certainly dominate your thoughts at the wrong time shortly afterwards. I'd make sure you have a couple practice sessions after reading it before competing.

I haven't read the tennis book but have read the golf book and enjoyed it quite a bit. Golf is very much like pool especially from the mental aspect. Definitely worth reading.

heres a few more to

The inner game is a great book. Also high or higher on the list is Mental Toughness Training for sports 1 and 2 and a couple other choice ones....enjoy.........Dave

No. It didn't go over too well in Muncie, even though there was more money added than in Ft. Wayne. Tourney at Lags in Columbus June 16. I think there's one in Edinburg this month too.
Yea, it was fun. I started a thread about it. Just a few details in it. I'm still recovering and trying to get working again.

Excellent book. Worth the read. Also consider "The Tao of Sports".

Two good books

Two of the best books to help your pool game (or any game) and have nothing to do with pool. "Inner Tennis" and the "Zen and the Art of Archery". A bit cerebral for the knuckledraggers but will get your head out of the box.
