Introducing myself

Bees' wax

Go with the beeswax. It isn't that difficult, and if you aren't completely satisfied with the result, you can easily reheat it, add a little, and do it over. Use a brand new 4-inch putty knife to shave it flat along the seam (not across the seam). Brand new. Should come out flat like glass.

Logan, How would you rate your level of play?

At this point I've gotta say complete rookie. It's been quite a while since I've picked up a cue stick - several years realistically. I played quite a bit while I was going to USF, but I'm not a fan of either of the two pool halls near me. One you can barely breathe in and the other I haven't gone back in years cause of a crappy experience I had with the management. Coupled with the fact that none of my buddies are enough into pool to go any sort of regularly, I just never really hit my local spots.
So I have no opinion on what I'm used to, like, don't like, or what's played locally.

PS It's hot & humid in Fla. like N.O.

Yes, but my table is indoors and I do air conditioning for a living. I've got one of the best units you can get right now, and temperature and humidity never get out of line in my house lol ;)

First, welcome to az. There's a lot of great people here and lots of good info available.

Your table looks very nice, like the whitewash look with the queen ann legs.

There is a degree of subjectivity on some of the decisions you have to make but there are a few bits of info that might help you out.

The reasons many here will try to steer you toward green of tourney blue simonis are these:

1. these are the two prominent cloth colors you will play on outside your home and if you want to be competitive, maybe play in some tourneys, etc., then why not practice at home on the same color cloth. It can provide a slight edge. You (and wifey) can decide on how important this is. Pool purists will say green only. Most tourney use tourney blue cloth. My opinion, which is just that, just my opinion is that either traditional green or tourney blue would be terrific choices.

2. Simonis is THE best quality cloth there is, nothing else is close. Simonis has unique identifying markers embedded throughout their cloth; the reason being people try to counterfeit their cloth. Nobody is trying to knockoff any other brands of cloth. There's a reason they don't. ;)

Simonis 860 is a great choice and the HR is a little more money but is more resistent to wear marks. You can weigh out the price difference vs benefit on this.

I admire your confidence and skill that allows you to do much of this work yourself.

However, I would seriously consider getting a ^good* pool table mechanic to do the final tweaking and recloth. Please note that even though someone may list themselves as a table mechanic, they may not be good at it. Over the years we have seen horrific hack jobs done by guys who were supposed to be experienced at this work.

If you decide to have the cloth done by someone, would recommend that you post where you are and someone here may suggest a good mechanic in your area.

Look forward to seeing your progress.

EDIT: Just noticed you are in Braden, FL.

best,
brian kc.

I'm in Brandon, FL (Tampa area) and didn't see any table mechanics in FL in the Table Mechanic Directory Thread. At least not on the first post, though it says it hasn't been updated in over a year. The closest 2 are in Georgia, and I see Mark Gregory (perfectpocketz) is banned from the site, though I don't know the history.

All I can go off for our local guys are the few vague google reviews and the reviews they have on their own websites. I stopped over at my local billiards supply store and wasn't completely impressed with their customer service while my wife and I were there. I know the store has been in business for decades, but that doesn't mean their current fleet of installers has been. And most of the local guys methods don't quite line up with the general consensus I've found on AZB. Some say that beeswax is the right way and bondo/water putty/plaster of paris are dead wrong - though realkingcobra on here swears by bondo (and he appears to be a very trusted mechanic here on AZB). Not that they're necessarily wrong, I just don't know enough about tables yet to know the difference between a good enough setup and a right setup. And I know I can do a good enough setup myself for free lol.

If the price wasn't too bad, I'd consider having a mechanic come finish the table for me, but I know I can use the $300-400 hundred a local company would charge to level the slate and lay the cloth.

I hope I'm not coming off as stubborn, cheap and ignorant lol

edit: Also, looking at my pics I've got 4 big screw holes in the middle of bed on my table. I'm apprehensive to fill those with beeswax due to the size of them. My brain tells me the soft wax would wear over time as balls run over them or possibly bounce and land right on the big wax spot on rare occasion.

Hey, RhoadBlock, a pleasure to meet you. I just flew back in myself, and boy are my arms tired. "Badabum-ching!"
I noticed on the bulletin board that a field trip is scheduled for next Thursday, to go see the world's most exotic turd collection, in Wainscoat, West Virginia. I heard they had one there that was shit by Elizabeth Taylor that smelled like Chanel #5, and had diamonds in it. Bus seats will go fast for this one.
Enjoy the forum, and don't believe anything you hear about CTE.

Thank you sir. I think we'll get along just fine. May I ask what CTE is? I've gotta catch myself up on all the AZB acronyms. I am but a humble newb.

Duly noted!

Would you guys believe it? My wife actually picked tournament green on her own with no influence from me. I knew I picked me a good one!

So against my stubborn will, I called Tony Crosby of Billiards and Darts of Spring Hill, talked to him a bit on the phone, and took the afternoon off to go to his shop yesterday afternoon. What a great group of people to work with! His wife was holding down the fort even tho she's due to give birth in 2 weeks lol. When Tony got back from picking lunch up for his wife and daughter I picked his brain about several things and learned a bit about tables. When I bought the table the guy included 4 house sticks, but 3 of them were in rough shape. One had a cracked ferrule. I asked Tony about picking one up and instead he threw in a new house cue stick for the price of a ferrule and tip. When I mentioned needing a shorty stick he gave me 2 shorties of different lengths for $15. They're all cheaper house sticks, but for starting out he's really got me started off on the right foot.

We needed a new set of pockets too for the table. Partially because one got torn in half by my buddy's little brother (my fault tho) and mostly because my wife hates that someone tried to "whitewash" the original Olhausen ones. Tony charged us only $50 for a new set of leather pockets.

They're scheduled to finish setting the table up on Monday, just in time for me to ignore all the work that needs to get done at my house during the holiday breaks and play pool instead lol. Tony might not be able to come personally due to his wife being days away from delivering their baby boy, but I feel I'm in good hands with his crew of guys, and he guaranteed me if anything is unsatisfactory he'd come out personally and address it once his baby boy is born.

All in all his price the the fairest of the several people I talked to, and after meeting him in person, I feel pretty good. Still not thrilled at the extra money, but happy that the table will be set up right for sure. Hopefully I can take off Monday morning and watch how everything goes down so I can do it myself the next time around.

I'll post pics once it's all said and done.

Now to make a ball polisher cause mine are in pretty rough shape too...

Welcome too the site and I'm with the other guys I'd go with blue or green keep the pics coming injoy ur stay here

Welcome to the forums Logan! Looks like that will turn out to be a nice table. If you're ever interested in any professional instruction, I'm just across the bridge, and will come to you in your home. PM me for more information. :D

The table finally got set up yesterday. Looks great imo. Not my first choice for pockets but they were only $50. I'll replace them with a better looking set sometime in the future. There was apparently a mix-up with the Simonis distributor, as when they picked up my cloth they brought 760 instead of 860. No biggie imo since there's no price difference. The table definitely rolls fast lol. The room is about a foot or so short on the long side of the table, so I need to get a medium length stick (the shorty we have is WAY too short for me). Standard cue stick is fine at all angles except perpendicular to the long rail.

I did a pretty good job at leveling the table myself, but it wasn't quite spot on. When they got there only a few shims were added to get the slate ends seamless. And honestly, I'm kinda glad I had pros come in and install the cloth. Watching them, it would have been a royal pain in the ass for me to try it on my own. Though, I'm confident I can change it in the future now that I've seen someone do it in person. Next time...

All that being said, I couldn't be more impressed with Tony Crosby and his guys. Price was excellent, they were prompt and worked quickly, yet carefully. I was able to chat with them the whole time while they worked and learned a few things. It was great to see guys be able to talk and have fun on the job WHILE CONTINUOUSLY working. None of the guys that work for me have grasped that concept yet!

Once my wife got home from her doctors appointments we played on the table a bit. She's the most frustrating person to play in the world lol. I'm not any good, but I at least try to line up my shots and plan ahead a bit. She shoots blindly and sinks balls in.

If anyone's ever in the Tampa, FL area you're welcome to come shoot around some time, and hopefully I can learn a thing or two. Pics of the new table below. I'll have to post updated pics once the walls are finished. We just took down the suede wallpaper a few days ago....
