I'm looking for a source of IPE for some break shafts, any ideas as to who deals in it? Any help is appreciated.

Can IPE really be used for break shafts? It's funny this question was asked because I was about to ask what options there are for a brown shaft. last night I had someone that wants me to build them a cue request a brown shaft, and I had no straight answer for them. The guy shot with the cue in My avater and liked It. It is a purpleheart conversion with a purpleheart shaft. The cue is My break stick, but He picked it up and started shooting with It. Phenolic ferrule and super pro tip LOL. He actually shot very well with it, but this guy could shoot with a broom stick if he wanted to. Anyway he asked me if I could make him a brown shaft, and I was racking My brain trying to think of something suitable in that color. Right off I told him even If I found something that would work that it would probably be heavy, and he said he likes alot of foreward weight.

I have some 1" IPE planks, that I may could cut into shaft squares, but that stuff is really heavy.

Speaking of heavy shafts, My Dad has a older cue from the philipines that is even ebony or some kind of black wood, and It has a matching shaft. The cue has quite a bit of weight, heck the shaft alone is fairly heavy. Too heavy for My taste, but quite a few people seem to like It for some reason.

That was Kamagong wood. Striped Philippine ebony. Same wood used for fighting sticks, Philippine pool chips and also popularly used for carving.

Thanks for the info Joey, I'll pass that on to My Dad. I have seen some that had the striping in them. His is solid black though, so I guess he got lucky. last I remember the cue was still straight. It weighs well over 20 ounces. Probably like 22-23oz or more. I should probably weigh It out on My scales to see. It's a Really heavy cue though.

i got some nice boards cheap on Ebay, but i have already cut them to core sizes.they were cheap.i would look there.

i wouldn't recommend the Lyptus, poor tone and not really nay stronger than Maple.

Thanks for the help guys, I want to have a few options for break shafts, as I have some who like the cue I just finished for my self, and some don't like the purpleheart shaft. Just a color thing. I would also like to try ash, but as of right now, can't find straight grain locally.
Dave

by the way i know a few said that Ipe is heavy and they are right.the pieces i have are just as heavy as Ebony, but with better tone.when i drop them on the concrete floor,it sounds like glass breaking.

Well it looks like I will have to order a board or 2 for IPE, as all the suppliers in my area don't carry it on hand. They won't even qoute a price until I place the order, and wait a day or 2. The sucky part is there isn't even a way to pick the boards for grainwork.:(
