Third International Pool Tour Qualifier Begins

Friday, February 17, 2006 -10:03 a.m.

With 74 players from all over the world showing up bright and early this morning, the third IPT qualifying tournament kicked off at 10 a.m. There is a strong internatinal flavor present, as reigning world champion Chia-Ching Wu of Taiwan is present, as well as former world champion Oliver Ortmann, Imran Majid, Goh Takami, Daryl Peach, and Yuji Takagi. Filipinos Santos Sambajon Jr., Ramil Gallego, and Warren Kiamco are here, and strong local representatives comprise Ismael “Morro” Paez, Oscar Dominguez, house pro Dave “Big Wave” Hemmah, Arturo Rivera, Frank “The Barber” Almanza, and Victor Ignacio. Runner-up in both events, Vilmos Foldes of Hungary is also here, hoping that three times is a charm for him.

The event is being held at Hard Times in Bellflower, CA, long established as the players’ room in Southern California. Fourteen Gold Crown tables are in action, and with only three days to get through so many players, as soon as one match is ended, another begins.

Tour founder Kevin Trudeau did a presentation at the players’ meeting, reminding them that they’re playing for 2006 season cards as most likely 2007 as well. “Playing pool on the IPT in 2007 means that you’re going to make a minimum of one hundred thousand dollar doing what you love to do,” he emphasized.

“Unfortunately, only two of you are going to earn your tour cards,” Trudeau continued, referring to the honor system that is used in all IPT events. “With that in mind, be professional. Raise the bar.”

As in the first two events, Trudeau is offering a $5,000 bonus to any player who runs six consecutive racks in tournament play. Additionally, at this event he is offering $500 to any player who makes the 8 ball on the break, and a $1,000 bonus for any player who banks in the winning 8 ball. This announcement was met with great applause … and some chuckles of anticipation.

Mike “The Mouth” Sigel is again on hand, and as in Atlanta’s qualifier, he will be playing sets of two eliminated players simultaneously tomorrow. The eliminated players have the chance to earn free entry fees into the remaining two qualifiers if they win a race to 8 against Sigel.

Trudeau summed everything up by stating, “I’m just trying to make pool a sport where the players make more money than the head of the association,” eliciting another round of applause from the players and spectators.

Visit the IPT for the latest news on their ongoing qualifying event.

Good to see more bonuses with the $500 for an 8-ball off the break. (Should be around 20 of these I'd imagine) and $1,000 for banking the winning 8-ball. (I figure this means to win a match)...with over 150 matches to be played, I wouldn't be suprised to see 20k given away through this bonus.

That's gotta be tempting if a player is a few games ahead! Could make for some interesting stories!!!

We might also expect about 4 six-packs to be made. So payouts could figure to around 50k. Plus likely 12k worth of free entries to other qualifiers given away.

How about those two new incentives? 8 on the break gets you $500 and bank the 8 gets you $1,000.

I suspect quite a few players will be banking the 8. Especially if they are way behind and feel winning the match is not gonna happen. Or, if they are way ahead and feel losing is not gonna happen. Play for that automatic bank.

I hope KT brought a lot of extra cash with him.
LOL

I seem to recall the $5k bounty was for six break-and-runs in the match, not necessarily consecutive? I could be wrong. That's a tough thing to pull out, and three folks did it in Atlanta a few weeks ago.

I doubt many folks will jeapordize a game win just to try for a quick grand, though. Penny wise, dollar foolish :P

Jake...It has to be only for the match winning 8-ball. Else the players could bleed him dry as there will be around 2500 8-balls potted in the tourney and just 20% of these made on double 8-balls would cost half a mil. The player's would go on a wrought spree.

Scott...I figure a lot of these guys uhmmed and ahhed about putting up 2k to play. A single shot for 1/2 that amount, when a few frames ahead will be veeerrryyy tempting, especially as they can probably make a bank shot 70% if they pay for position on it. 1k doesn't come that easy very often.

Matches Begin at Hard Times

Friday, February 17, 2006 - 11:06 a.m.

The first round of the matches has begun at the third IPT qualifier, being held in Bellflower, CA, at Hard Times Billiards. The 74 entrants are playing races to 10 in 8-ball, and with all the bonuses tour founder Kevin Trudeau has added, it’s hard to imagine that anyone will leave empty-handed.

General manager and part owner of Hard Times, Brooke Thomason stated after the matches began, “Working with the IPT has been a very pleasant experience. We’re very excited to work with them, we’re hoping for wonderful things for them, and anything they do is going to be great for the entire pool world.”

She added, “Dave Hemmah, our house pro, is here and playing in all the events. Hopefully he can win on his home turf. That would be fantastic.” So far, Hemmah has played in all three events, and he’s hoping that this will be his last stop.

The father-and-son team of Gary and Craig Sanossian, who hail from Boston, MA, both drew first-round byes and will play each other in the second round. “What are the odds that we both get a bye and end up playing each other in the next round?” Gary wondered. “The good thing is, at least one of us will make it to the third round!”

Pool is Changing for the Better

Friday, February 17, 2006 - 12:35 a.m.

Some interesting differences are being noticed at this qualifying event. The room is packed far more than anyone anticipated. Both the players and spectators are dressed better and more stylish than has been seen in most pool tournaments to date. It's obvious to everyone who the IPT staff is with their professional attire. Two Playboy models have joined the IPT staff adding the unique glamour to the event.

IPT founder Kevin Trudeau talked about the slow cloth. The players chuckled when he pointed out that you can no longer slow-roll balls. It's time to play real pool again and hit the balls hard. Most players smiled and applauded. Both spectators and players are ecstatic about the new professionalism, ethics, and money being brought to pool. Kevin Trudeau addressed many questions about scheduling conflicts, equipment, and the future of the IPT. The players and spectators have all expressed incredible pleasure about the openness and candor that Mr. Trudeau uses when answering questions. The tournament is in full-swing. The pressure that the players are experiencing is something that they have not been use to. The anticipated match is with Chia-Ching Wu and how he plays using IPT rules. Speculation about how this world champion will adapt to the slow cloth, tight pockets, and breaking from the center of the table is the talk of the tournament. The one thousand bank-the-eight bonus is causing a stir. Most players when faced with the decision of winning the game or gambling for the $1,000 are choosing to win the game. When asked, most players say they do not want to risk loosing $100,000 for a "maybe" $1,000 bonus.

You gotta love forums :D

Now this is waht Im talking about, tempted to put my name down for weert now, you got two races to ten minimum, you only got to bank two 8balls and you got your entry back. Not to mention the 6 pack, 8 on break etc..

I sure love free speach! ;)

I don't see Jimmy Mendoza on the list, he said he was in. Am I over looking something? Anyone know if he is there? Thanks in advance, peace, John.

Bank-the-eightball Bonus Mania!

Friday, February 17, 2006 - 1:00 p.m.

Santos Sambajon and Roman Hybler both banked the eight twice in their first match earning them each $2,000 in bonus money! Frank Almanza banked the eight once earning him $1,000. Amazing there have been over ten missed banks and in four cases it cost the player the match! The excitement continues.
---------------

Can you believe this. It seems KT is paying 1k on banked 8-balls for any game.

Has he done the math?

This could cost him a few hundred thousand.

Who wishes they were in the qualifiers now????

I missed that Colin. The 8 only on game 10 banked gets $1,000. They are playing a race to 10 right?

Can you imagine someone up 9-5 and banking the 8 and missing? Then the other player running 5 racks.

Didn't something similar happen to Foldes which placed him in 3rd?

Pressure.

Jake

Dunno if it had to do with the 8-ball or banking the eight, but Foldes did indeed have Van Boening down 9-5, missed, and VB ran out and then broke-and-ran four more to win.

Yeah, i just read that myself. That's crazy. Is that what KT really meant? Maybe the players or the reporter misunderstood. Someone can make a decent living just playing on these qualifiers and banking the 8. :)

The only match I see that might be called an upset is Sam Frangie over Rob Saez, but I'm not sure cuz I'm not familiar with Sam, I just know that Rob's playing really good. Anyone know anything about Sam Frangie?

Latest report says the 8-ball bank bonus is just for day 1.

I have to wonder if this was a mistake or it was offered just on day 1 from the beginning?

Dunno how many matches are planned for today, but this could add up to a pretty decent amount.

Sam's an Aussie, has played mostly 8-ball on US style tables around Sydney for the last 10 years or so. 'TheOne' has played him a bit I believe. He's always been one of the top players but not as good as the best. In earlier days he was a snooker pro.

Maybe he's been putting in a lot of work and has lifted his game.

I really think/hope KT looked at the field and finally realised he messed up. He seems to be giving more and more back in the qualifiers which is a very GOOD THING for the players that missed out. The players that finish high get free entries in next events, the early losers get to make decent cash from 8 ball banks, AND anyone can make money from running a six pack. Not to mention beating THE MOUTH of course for 5k!

Put my name down for weert colin :D

PS
I never played Sam myself just in the same comps a few times, he seemed very tactical. I believe he played in the last two World 8 ball champs in UAE. Last I heard he was also coaching some of the local arab boys there and making a decent living. He seemed popular with some of the guys I met in Taiwan qualifiers whoe where from the UAE.

I don't mean to convey that i'm not interested in the pool as well, but can somebody post some pics of these 2 models, quickly, lol.

I'd just like to go on record and explain recent comments made under my name! This was NOT me, I love the playbo....err...IPT and I think it is 1000% the greatest thing that has ever happened, not only in pool, but possibly the unniverse! :D

<weert application form: first name err?>

Colin,

Reading between the lines my take is that KT is highly dissappointed with the ethics of some of the players and that is why the bonus will end.

Me thinks that if they were his employees they would be hearing the words "you're fired" loud and clear.

It is things like this that will make it mandatory for a contract in 2007 where items like ethics, drugs and alcohol will be addressed.

Oh well, leave it to the pool players to muck things up.

Jake
