Is chalk dust healthy?

Seems to me that most activities that generate a fine dust that can be inhaled generally recommend wearing a breathing mask and not doing so can have some negative health effects.

Has anyone in the industry ever done a study on the health effects of long term exposure to chalk dust?

Are lung conditions more common to long term pool players?

Just call me paranoid!

Cheers!

Does it even really matter when most people in the pool hall smoke anyway.
AWWW for PETE'S SAKE!!! GIVE IT A REST PEOPLE!!!

Thanks,

Sick and tired.

Actually, Im alergic to chalk(mildly) and I havent ever noticed anything wrong from hanging aroud pool halls and bars

The effects of pool chalk are well-documented and highly detrimental. Known effects include heavy gambling, making stupid bets, eating fast food, choosing pool chalk over a nagging girlfriend or wife, and dogging that shot you should've made. If you experience any of these you have instant chalk dust insanity and should consult with a medical specialist, or take up golf.

Chalk is essentially dirt in a wrap. When the ball is hit hard and you look at slow motion frames there is an explosion of chalk dust on impact. It falls down on the cloth away from your nose, it does not float up, beside you pull away after the shot and leave the cloud any way. A cloud is around the tip. Yes you have to inhale some of it and what dust is good for you. I think the amounts are so little and so fine you can not even see it, I am not concerned about it. I am concerned about the 19 people smoking in the room trying to kill me with their 2nd hand smoke. I am concerned about getting ran over on the freeway.
Thats the problem. You will find smog in any major city a bigger problem to your health than chalk dust. Worry about the hot dogs and hamburgers and french fries you are eating in the room, they are killing you deader than a door nail. Worry can also cripple or kill you.

I only use a brand new piece of chalk. I only chalk on the edges, never in the middle. I use very light swipes trying to see how little and how thin a coat I can put on. You never hear my chalk squeek or grind, that puts that thick coat on that explodes. Chalk light, you will be fine.

Smoking Benefits:
Parkinson's disease. The frequency of this degenerative disorder of the nervous system among smokers appears to be half the rate among nonsmokers – an effect recognized by the Surgeon General as along ago as 1964.

Alzheimer's disease.Similarly, the frequency of this degenerative mental disorder has recently been found to be as much as 50%less among smokers than among nonsmokers for example, by the H studies reviewed in the International Journal of Epidemiology in 1991.

Endometrial cancer. There is extensive and long-standing evidence that this disease of the womb occurs as much as 50% less among smokers as documented by, for example, a New England Journal of Medicine article back in 1985. The triggering mechanism appears to be a reduction on estrogen levels.

Prostate cancer.Conversely, smoking seems to raise estrogen levels in men and may be responsible for what appears to be a 50% lower rate of prostate cancer among smokers, although this needs corroboration.

OsteoarthritisThis degenerative disorder of bone and cartilage is up to five times less likely to occur among heavy smokers as documented, for example, by the federal goevrnment's first Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Colon cancer, ulcerative colitisThese diseases of the bowel seem to be about 30% and 50% less frequent among smokers documented, for example, by articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association and in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1981 and 1983, respectively.

Other benefits that have been suggested for smoking: Lower rates of sarcoidosis and allergic alveolitis, both lung disorders, and possibly even acne. Smokers are also lighter ironically, because obesity is a leading cause of the cardiovascular disease that smoking is also supposed to exacerbate. So you could quit smoking and still die of a heart attack because of the weight you put on.

btw: Chalk used to be made from limestone which is basically Calcium Carbonate CaCO3. These days it is made up of abrasives, the chemistry of which I know nothing at this stage.

What tripe.

Maybe because smokers who survive lung cancer, emphysema, cardiac complications from smoking, etc. are exceptionally viable specimens and they don't get the other diseases. Maybe if we all smoke incessantly we will evolve into a species that not only tolerates smoking, but uses it as as source of food. Our stomachs will evolve to a residual organ like the appendix and all nourishment will be received via our lungs.
Whether or not pool rooms should have the freedom to determine their own smoking policy is a question worthy of debate. To debate whether or not smoking is good or bad for you is waste of time and energy. The suggestion that smoking is good for you is a non sequitur.

Yes. I think chalk dust is too heavy to float in the air and create a health hazard. I think majority of chalk dust can be found on cloth, shaft and your hands.

Like the real pool player I am I of course smoked for decades. Real men back then all smoked. The reward for that was the cancer sticks were killing me and I could see if I continued they would destroy my health and I would suffer a long and cruel death. Tests then showed my lung capacity had been reduced by 50%. Not wanted to spend my final days in a wheel chair teetered to an oxygen bottle I suspended my addiction to the drug. Once your addicted you never quit. I have been clean for 11 years and my lung capacity is now back up to 80%, but 20% was permanant damage.
It is a really bad drug delivery system. What helped me get off them was to finally see them for what they were, simple poison. I was buying poison that was destroying my vital organs and that was stupid. Being smarter dan dee average bear, I got hip and wized up.

I read a book about Cornbread Red several months ago (can't remember the title at the moment). It said that he had x-rays of his lungs taken later in life that showed a build-up of chalk in his lungs, like a coal miner. Seems like if you live in pool rooms all your life, you can't help but breathe in chalk dust and talcum powder. It's gotta go somewhere!

These are long term degenerative deseases. Many smokers would shorten their life enough to not have to deal with these.

What man wants raised estrogen? Can you say low libido and gynecomastia?

Heavy smokers aren't the most athletic people in the world and Osteoarthritis typically occurs in these types of people.

Smokers are lighter because nicotine is a stimulant and actually burns a few calories for each cigarette. However, if you quit smoking you will have more aerobic and anaerobic capacity so unless you remain sedintary then you will not gain much weight.

Come On People What Are You Trying To Do? They Have Already Banned Everything Under The Sun In California, Including Smoking In Pool Rooms Now If This Keeps Up We Will Not Be Able To Inhale Chalk Dust Or Eat It. Then Pool Rooms Will Really Go Out Of Business.

Maybe, but people rarely here of the possible benefits of smoking. I don't recommend it, but there are reasonable arguments for benefits to some people prone to certain conditions to consider smoking a type of medication. In the same way that some doctors will advise the taking of red wine. Smoking is just too politically incorrect these days.

Well you're up on your endocrinology. But I doubt estrogen levels are elevated high enough to cause gyno.

Heavy smokers aren't the most athletic people in the world and Osteoarthritis typically occurs in these types of people.
Several world class athletes, including jumpers and sprinters have been smokers. And, what may amaze some, is that the marathon world record holder Steve Jones smoked a pack a day. Fact is, if you smoke and exercise frequently, almost all contamination to the lungs is removed. Being a couch potato smoker is definitely dangerous.

Smoking also depresses the appetite and acts as a time filler.

Another poster mentioned the pool hall ban.

There should be no argument at all. Your place of business should be treated as private property, for you to decide if it is smoking allowed or non-smoking. Laws forbidding this are one of the biggest encroachments ever of the nanny state. Next they'll ban you from smoking in your own home.

Colin, they have just banned smoking in all public places in the entire country of Ireland, that is where this thing is going. Of course some pubs are having riots. The fine for being caught is $6000 or 90 days in jail. How tough is that one?
