Is it anything?

Hi folks, I need some wood knowledge please.

About 25 years ago, this was leaning against the dumpster at the apartments I lived at.
I did not have much and it was a cool piece of wood.
Needless to say it has been sitting in the corner of some room ever since.

It is 41" long and about 2 1/2" thick and 20" at it's widest point. The bathroom scale says it weighs 18 lbs.

The shiny side looks to be some type of shellac (Like an old tavern table). The back is untouched and has a definite gray to it.

Like the title says: Is it anything?

Thanks,

John

IMO, it's hard to say for sure, BUT, don't think it's redwood...too heavy, and to greyish on the exposed bottom side. The finish is old, and so is the bottom side, take a belt sander to the underside and remove the greyish tint may help. The figure is very nice, and is definitely can be made into a few cues, once the wood is correctly identified, it would make it easier for a cuemaker to work it. I would love to see what it really can look like with the proper work.

it's not a Redwood, you can see the colored stain wrapped around to the back side.

I would bet it's a Western Maple. It has the same exact figure as the King size bed set I made in the 90's, it has 100 pieces of highly figured curl. The figure is an exact match. The live edge is as well.

Over the years I have had loaded log trucks with this stuff, taken it to a mill and milled it with the Sawyer. I always quarter sawed my logs and the beauty is top notch but it's not for pool cues except rings or butt sleeves.

Over the years I have given away lots of wood just like it.

It also makes sense that it's Western Maple because you're in the NW.

I could be wrong, who knows for sure without seeing it in person.

I've handled some redwood billets that were very dense, and has that greyish look to the wood without finish.

In the sun?

It is a gorgeous piece of wood. We will have sun today. Would natural light pics make a difference?

If we get a decent ID, and someone can use it, I would rather them have it.
I will try and hit it with some sandpaper.

All I have is a skill saw, If I were to cut it, would you recommend any certain pattern. (Would I cut it long ways, across, squares or rectangles?)

Or just leave it whole.

I have to say. You guys are incredible! I understand identifying wood. To me, differentiating burl (especially after it has been coated) is nuts. Those swirls and patterns look identical to me no matter what kind of wood.
My thoughts were so far off!!

There is a tentative deal going...

If it doesn't work out, I will offer it to Dave, then NutsforTascs.

Thanks for the info all!
