Is it ok to clean pool balls or cues with alcohol?

A few years ago at the BCA Nationals in Vegas, I had Guido Orlandi clean up my cue. I talked to him afterward about what he uses and how to apply it. He uses denatured alcohol and follows that up by applying pure carnauba wax. When applying the denatured alcohol he uses kleenex tissue so no wood is removed from the shaft. The same goes for the carnauba wax, tissue is great because it won't wear out the shaft.
1) put denatured alcohol on kleenex and wipe down shaft to clean it
2) apply a little carnauba wax to kleenex and rub cue very fast so you heat it up. This will get the wax into the grain of the shaft. Let it dry for about 10 minutes and wipe off wax with, you guessed it, another kleenex.

Ok Guido, if you are reading this, I just threw a huge plug for ya buddie! ;)
If anyboody is in Vegas or other places where Guido Orlandi is working at his booth, he does a really good job.

the term "denatured" literally refers to the rendering of the alcohol into a form that is toxic to humans so that they cannot consume it. It is not "natural" to drink these solutions.

I actually use Everclear with a magic eraser and it works like a charm. I will also burnish it and use carnauba or pure bees wax, whatever I have available to finish it off. The alcohol will dry the wood out a bit. The burnishing and wax will definitely bring back that super smooth feel and help protect the finish for a little longer.

That is interesting. Do you know if the carnauba wax would affect a 314 shaft differently? I wouldn't think it would make a difference, but it is hollow so i'm not sure about letting it get into the wood. Thanks.

A little different

I use a product called 'Orange' produced by Kroger. It is available in their grocery stores. It is made 100% from oranges, and is biodegradable. It cleans the shaft and the ferrule very well. I spray onto a paper towel, and then run it up and down the shaft and ferrule to clean.

I, then, dry the shaft, and then apply 'Pledge' with a paper towel. I use Pledge because my cuemaker told me to only use a wood polish on the shaft, no oils or wax.
