Is it the cue or the tip?

I just completed a 6 hour cue stick test (homemade test and not very technical). I played 6 hours with 10 different cues and divided up the time with each. Without going into very boring details, I realize that I play best with my Shurtz (Bob Owen) and Moori tip. However, the Shurtz is the only cue I have with a Moori tip on it. So it's hard to tell if it's the tip or the cue. The other cues (Jacoby, Meuccis, Viking, McDermott, Action, Players, Dufferin, Lucasi) have Snipers, Elk Master, Le pros, and Triangles.

He's my question: for those of you in the know and may own a Shurtz, would you think it's the Shurtz or the Moori (medium)?

I know this is a very different question without more information, but I'm bored (waiting on the termite man to arrive at home) and thought I'd start up a topic.

Omg, it's the cue.. Tips are just in peoples heads or something and that drives me crazy...

Here's a quick rant:

1. You miscue too much? It's not the tip, it's you.
2. Why does everyone tell new players they need a softer tip? I had to put some tips on last night for some people, and who do you think knows what kind of tip they want? ...them? ...or me? (sounds funny, doesn't it...lol)
3. Moori's cost a fortune. Triangles cost 50 cents. For a 6000% price increase is a Moori worth it? ...nope.

Why don't you try all the cues with all the tips and carefully document your impressions? That would certainly answer your question!

nope. tips matter

lots of things are in my head, but tips do make a difference.
throw is different, spin is different, hardness/softness is different.
btw, I think shafts and cue weights make a big difference too,
but it's just my opinion.

Oh jeez, sorry I lost my mind for a minute there.

Well, on second thought, it's probably a combination. I can think of a few tip/shaft combos that make me want to vomit. :p

I have a Sniper and Hercules tips on my Samsara shafts, and both feel very different from shaft to shaft.

I would have to seriously question someone saying that a tip has little to do with the overall feel of the hit of a cue.

Its both cue and tip "that I play best with"

You are joking right? The tip is the most important part of any cue. What is a race car with bald tires? You make no sense.

Triangles are good tips, but some may feel that $10 isn't that high a price to pay for something that may help make them thousands.

It's the cue.

Ditto. First and foremost it's the cue, and the same shaft will play differently on different butts, at least that's true with the various butts and shafts I have, and they are all interchangeable.

The tip is very important too, but the cue comes first.

It Simply Has To Be The Shaft/Ferrule/Tip Combo!!

Tip contacts cueball, contact feel resonates or travels thru tip, thru ferrule, thru shaft, thru joint, thru forearm, thru handle into the "feel receptor" otherwise known as "the hand".

It would seem, and I could certainly be way off, that unless you are breaking, that a HUGE percentage of the feel is absorbed by the tip (and the pad-if there is one), the ferrule and the shaft long before it gets close to the joint and the forearm.

(How about the different types of shafts, age of shaft, density etc, into the equation.)

Am I missing something or ............. ??

Oddly enough - I was talking to a well know cuemaker about 2 hours ago and he told me that "my cues play best with a _____ tip." As it turns out I had played with one of his cues that had just come from him-and I thought they played or hit way too harsh for me. When I played the same cue a week later, after he had changed the tip, the cue hit like a dream.

I am so confused!

If the tip isn't junk or too soft or too hard for your liking, it's the cue as a whole.

Combination of both.

At times, I've played with the same stick for periods up to 15 years. I've tried a lot of different tips on the same cue and it does effect the hit.

I always went back to the same combination eventually. It was what I was most comfortable and confident with.

Its both imo.

A bad tip on a good cue is still a bad hit.
Great tip on a bad cue helps..but its still a bad hit overall.

Its a quality cue and tip in unison that begin to offer up good "feel" imo and the better the "feel" the better the play.

I don't think its one or the other...as a matter of fact I'm sure it can't be.
Just my two cents.

If you want to learn somthing and have a $100.00 to piss away. go to a billard hall with a shaft repair station. Shoot for an hour or two and put on a different tip ..I think after several times of changing different tips you'll be very suprized !! As far a putting a $.50 tip on a $1k cue I'm not even going to go there !!! I'll take any advantage in my equipment I can get !! Bill

Haven't spent much time at race tracks, have you? A race car with "bald" racing slicks is faster than a race car running street (tread) tires...

I'm calling a HIGH JACK FOWL!

play nice.

Some cues don't play so well because they have goofy balance or an odd feel (poor weight distribution for example). No tip will compensate for these things. On the other hand changing tips can make a dead feeling cue turn into a crisp hitting treasure.

It's both, it's teamwork, it's a system, and when it all comes together it's down right sublime.

I think Matcase nailed it...we're always looking for that "magic"...the one where all the factors come together just right. It's all about the total feel...

"Sublime"

"Sublime" Leave it to Matcase to use a word like that to describe a cue hit:) The only sublime I can think of in a pool room is the limes under the ones on top that they put in my Margarita. Matcase is a friend of mine and he knows of what speaks!!;)
