Is it true nice guys finish last?

Two reasons not to loan this guy that cue again:

1) You said you found a nick in it. Don't be shy about this - tell this guy flat out that there's a small bit of damage to that cue that wasn't there before you loaned it to him. It may be circumstantial evidence, but there you go. No nick, he used it, new nick.

2) You say he's promised you massages for the cue loan and you've never collected. There's another reason to stop loaning your cue to this guy - he makes promises to you that he doesn't keep. All you're doing by loaning the cue again and again is enabling that sort of behavior.

As far as him beating you with your own cue - that's a relative non-issue. He just was shooting well in general at the time. To deny him the loaner for those reasons would be terribly petty. The stuff above, however, are (IMHO) valid reasons not to loan this guy your cue ever again.
 
Linda....I, too, get asked to borrow a cue...well, I did, til I sold the Allers...lol. I am also considered to be a nice person..but not with my cues. When asked, I politely say no, and explain that I do not loan out my equipment...but will be more than happy to help them pick out a suitable barstick, or refer them to a local maker who has very reasonable prices ($175 for an s/p). I also have them ask me all the time what I spent on a particular cue...to which I reply, I do not discuss the value of my equipment.

Funny thing is, this used to happen to me all the time when I rode my motorcycle. Used to make me just crazy to step out of a bar after a ride, to find someone sitting on my bike, and asking if they could take it for a ride! It never ceases to amaze me what people are or are not thinking!!

But I agree, saying 'no' can be difficult...but I am learning! Perhaps this is another reason I choose to carry a smaller case with just one cue in it!!

It developed a tink, which is a sound that something is loose inside or with the tip. It did not get nicked.

The massage was never really the issue. When I do favors, I am not looking to get something in return. But it let him save face. I only pointed it out because he couldn't even come through on that half-hearted offer.

He did shoot well. One of the reasons I hate bar cues is because they are not pro-tapered, which means you either need a very loose closed bridge, an open bridge, or have to keep adjusting to the varying diameter in your bridge. I was just wondering how well he would have played with a bar cue under those conditions. And I was also grousing about the slop factor, which of course, is why I really don't like 9ball, but that is neither her nor there.
 
Sorry, didn't catch the difference between tink/nick. :D Same issue, though - it wasn't there before you loaned it out, and it was there when you got it back.

On the massages bit - my point was, this guy made promises and he didn't keep them. Doesn't matter what the promise was for. And I think you realize that too, based on your reply.
