A question for the more knowlegable players on here(that is everyone outside of myself):I currently have a 3 1/2 x7 Olhausen table at home that i try to keep in as good of condition as possible(Simonis,tight pockets,very level) and have had several friends who are much better players comment that it was one of the most difficult(a relative term i know) 7 ft tables they have played on BUT it is stiil a 7 ft table.My wife is being totally unreasonable(background laughter at this point) and will only allow me to move one wall in the basement which would allow me to put in an 8ft table.Is it worth it to only move up to an 8ft?The layout of the supporting walls wont allow a 9 ft and believe it or not she wont even discuss moving!Thanks,M.S.

Im no engineer or expert, but I moved a steel column in my basement over about three feet. I cut a 4x4 post the height I needed and installed it, then cut out the beam. I now have a few cracks in the sheetrock in my bedroom which is above the basement, so I would think twice before removing a wall if it is load bearing. If like you say it isnt I would remove it. In league we only play on 9 ft. tables, but playoffs, tourneys and Vegas are 8 ft. so its good to get use to the 8 footers IMO.
Need more info. Do you live near a poolroom? Does your wife let you go there? How often?
My inclination is to suggest that tearing down walls so that you can upgrade to an eight foot table isn't worth your trouble, as you've managed to set your table up in a way that will challenge you and keep you fairly sharp.
Still, if you want to compete on the big tables, you need to go to your local poolroom to play in leagues and/or tournaments.

That's a relief to hear... I've heard that an ex of mine is "not allowed to shoot pool" anymore, which is something I see often with couples. I've actually had guys I've dated tell me they don't want me shooting pool, and I just laugh... I'd still be laughing as I'm waling into the pool hall...

Well you just tell her the other kids on the block (internet) have added/remodeled/gutted entire second floors of their house JUST for the pool table!
So what's with moving just a few walls?
If that does not work, try the silent treatment.
If that still does not work, tell her she will not "get any" until she sees things your way....

When we bought our house (this is my 3rd house) my wife wanted a swimming pool and I told her I would like to have one room big enough for a 9' pool table. We wanted a larger lot and a nicer neighborhood anyway. The family room (with a 9' Olhausen) has become the center of our home. My daughter dances there, kids play pool when we have get togethers, etc. We all kind of hang around there.
Although we were really emotionally attached to our old home and setting, we had just outgrown it. Sometimes it's little silly things like this that motivate us and change our lives for the better. I will never feel guilty or strange about having a nice billiards room - Hearst Castle here in California has a beautiful billiard room - if it was good enough for William Randolf Hearst, it's good enough for me.
