Does it have a rotating beater bar? Or are you literally saying it sucked the cloth up off of the table?

the attachment i used is second on the left
the wider atachment
it has no beater bar
just an open space
when i dragged it acroos the cloth
the cloth really seemed to stick to it
i was afraid it (the cloth)would lift up (but it didnt)
it doesnt seem i loosened the cloth after the vacuuming
but im alittle scared to do it again

We use a 1hp shop vac. I'm not sure I'd use anything more powerful, but I think you'd be better off with a brush attachment if you do. I have a brush shaped just like the one you used that I got from a Kirby dealer. It works good and doesn't suck down tight to the cloth.
