Is there a safe way to trade cues?

Agreed, but I think most of us are answering a question to a forum member that we assume is an honest person.

But yes, a screwing can be a two-way street.

Maniac

I assume he is honest as well, which is why I say escrow, face to face or he gets cue first...............or no deal.

I was speaking in general terms as the OP ask in general.

In general no cheap way to trade cues without someone taking a huge (cue value +shipping) risk.

I would in No way trade cues unless the value of said cues made it worth going through escrow and the hassle of doing it.

There was a time when I agreed to that but there is always a snake laying in wait so, does not matter who contacted who "sometimes".

If everyone was honest then yep, you contact me, you send your cue first.

Unfortunately, everyone is not honest. Also, just because someone has a good rep does not mean you will not be the first one they screw.

Escrow or face to face is really the only truly safe methods this day and time.

Then again, if a cue value is below a certain price point, escrow may not be viable for profit or selability in a slow market.

Face to face works MOST of the time. Several Craiglist face-face deals has turned into outright robberies here in B'ham recently!

I have a very nice cue that I am considering selling. The other night a guy mentioned putting it on Faceplant. I laughed and told him if it did not sell face to face locally I'd just take it to the grave with me. Escrow or face 2 face are my only options... JMO!

I have a pool cue up on a Facebook group for sale. I guy messaged me and wants to do a trade. I want to trade him cues, but have never done a trade online like that. The guy doesn't have much up on his Facebook profile, so I am Leary. What if I mail him my cue and he never mails me his? Seems like an easy way to get scammed. What is the best way to make a trade that is safest?? Thanks

No. The only reason someone wants to get rid of something in a trade is because it is flawed, he doesn't want it, etc. Don't do it.

I get the someone's trash is another one's treasure. Do yourself a favor and don't do it, until you have it in your hands, and can inspect it. Forget online deals, boards, etc, unless you get the chance to handle it.

No is your friend, in a lot of cases.

All the best,
WW

Yeah, I know. I'm in bham couple times a year.

Seems it is getting worse there last few years which is why I didn't want my wife working at U.A.B..

I go to bumpers when in town. Last time down I played some guy name Johnny that won bumpers state championship this past year.

Some champion he turned out to be...lol....i robbed (pun intended) him playing 9 ball, 10 ball, 1 hole and banks all in same nite.

Still can't believe he won the 9 ball championship in bham as his games weak.

I know his last name but have no clue how to spell it. It is pronounced "when" but spelled way different. I think he is Korean if I'm not mistaken.

A guy they call Tyson is the one that set our game up. He is a banker. I hope he manages the bank better than he does pool matches. Lol

Do you know either of those two?

You'd have to pay a small transaction fee, but you could both agree on the same price and do a buy it now sale on ebay, each of you buy the other's cue and then you'd have ebay/paypal protections as well...this is of course if you aren't close enough to go look at it and decide if it is a worthy trade.

I'm retired and just started playing in league, 1st time back since '99. And I know your up north of me.
I have asked about and was pointed out Johnny Nguyen. I asked about him because of the post you had about them stiffing you. I don't know or have seen "Tyson" but I'll ask again a couple guys I know. I wanted to know who do be aware of even if I don't gamble like that, I just don't want stink from shit getting on me.
I only play Sunday afternoon but sometime practice by myself on Tues & Thurs at 4:00 opening time.

I like trading cues to try something new. That does not mean there is anything wrong with the one I have for trade. I also feel there are people who feel the same way about the cue they have. Typically it is not the only cue I have or they have. Agree to something that works for both parties.

I recently traded a big cue for another big cue and cash on top. Mine was too fancy for me to play with and he liked it. His cue was simpler but from HOF maker.

Advice to OP is to do your homework. Get on buyer/seller group and see if that person has done any deals in the past. If not, ask for references. I have done lots of deals on FB going that route. If you are uncomfortable, don't do it or find someone to escrow.

Yes, that's the johnny I was speaking of.

When I was playing at bumpers, the best nights for action was Monday and Wednesday night's.

People would normally come and go at random from around 7 or so to 12ish or closing if someone got stuck and wanted to chase their money.

I stopped going due to most everyone wanting weight when their game was close to mine already (lock artists), larger ahead games was almost always fishy. Seems like the underdog always walked with the cheese after enough was bet with the rail. Like I said, anything that was not cheap always ended up being weird in the end and then ran out the door. I got tired of it and stopped making the trip.

A friend of johnny paid me the money I was stiffed about 6 months later. My very next trip to bham johnny challenged me again. That time I tortured him in five sets from about 9 to 3 a.m.. this time I made sure third party "I knew held money".

It was still cheap sets compared to his gambling rep ($100 sets). In no way would I ever play him again. It's nothing but drama or at least it was for me.

Also, be careful of the regulars coming up and saying " wanna hit em around if you already have a 9 foot rented. They will eat your table time and walk away and not offer a penny toward their play. Do it once and they will expect it every time. Then when when you do ask, " hey, wanna split table time".....they play 10 minutes and drag up.

Go enjoy league nights. There's a good crowd in there for the biggest part as long as you leave at end of league. After that, be aware of being stiffed or thrown under buses.

Sad but true.

Again, it's been a while since I've made the trip. Maybe things are better now. I hope so.

Trade deals have a high failure rate, especially compared to buy/sell transactions. The failure/dissatisfaction rate of shaft trades increases exponentially.

Trades are usually with a party who has no money which is usually the basis of many of the problems.

Thanks Rake. I'm 64 and I grew up in West End and Ensley. I know a few of the guys my age, went to school with Frankie G, former owner of Poppa G's) from 1st grade & ran around with David R's brother when David was still on a bicycle.
If I ever hear someone call out "Rake" I'll be sure to say hello, take care!

Meh...

So many horror stories with shipping cues... if it's a trade, face to face only, IMO.
My buddy shipped a Joss butt to get an Irish Linen re-wrap, never saw it again. Yes, he had insurance on it, and that's a seperate nightmare.

Only when cues are exchanged and examined in person face to face or else use a 3rd party escrow.
