Is there a version of 8-ball where...

How is that not really doubles? I've played a lot of doubles matches where you shoot till you miss. Scotch doubles is definitely more popular these days, but to say it's not really doubles is kinda odd. I feel that scotch is better for tournaments, but for gambling, regular doubles is awesome (especially if everyone is good).

Because if you shoot till you miss, you are playing two singles matches not really "doubles". Imagine doubles tennis when only one person hits the ball till they miss then the other one steps in. "Doubles" should be both players at the table using their strengths and weaknesses together, not just banded together against two others but still shooting separately. This way the game is not just won when the stronger person gets to the table and the weaker player is just filler till that happens. I hate "doubles" when it's shoot till you miss since that pretty much negates anything the weaker players do. Get an APA 11 max, with a 7 and a 4, the 4 misses, the other 4 misses, the 7 runs out. Boring and not the point of a balanced team. Now if the 7 made a shot but then the 4 is up again, that is some parity and even distribution of skill.

I also would not gamble in doubles unless it's alternate shots, because again, you are not playing doubles with two players you are playing separate singles matches on the same table. The only doubles thing there may be if you are allowed to coach and talk over shots, but if your shots don't affect what the partner shoots after you, I don't see how that can be a real doubles match.

if someone brings up playing "doubles" but wants to play shoot till you miss, I just tell them, well we can just play on two different tables, and let's go at it.

Both players actions will be responsible for the outcome. I see why you don't like it, lots of people don't like it, but to say it's "not doubles" is silly.
