OK, well where shall i begin, lol I had a Schon LTD from Feb 2000 till last July, and ended up selling it. Durrrrrrrr first stupid move,,, well second stupid move which would have kept me from making the first one was buying a Meucci Original which was a nice buy.

It was Refinished and Rewrapped by Meucci, came with original shaft refinished and 2 brand new shafts.

Well the problem i think lies in the fact that I kinda lost interest in my Schon thinking it wasnt playing as well as my Meucci, But now i have a buyer for my Meucci, and am in the process of looking for a new cue.

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a better player than me, and he said basically all you need these days, is a Cue with a Steel joint, and a stiff shaft, or getting a Predator shaft for the Cue.

Now i think my problem is i just need to find a cue that i actually like, lol I have been looking at Vikings, Lucasi, Joss, and a couple other cues also.

Has anyone else had this problem with going through Cues lol,,, Now obviously i wish i could buy another Schon because i loved the way mine played, felt expecially since it was a 17oz!!!! it was like a twig in my hands.

If anyone has any Helpful thoughts please pass them on :)

there are definitely good and bad playing cues for everyone. I've played with MANY cues only to find very similar results but with different feels to the cue. the only conclusion I have come to is this: every cue plays great for someone, but not everyone. my favorites are made by a guy in ERIE PA by the name of Bob Dzuricky. I like little feedback in the butt of my cue and he builds mine to my liking. I also have a schon that I got from mike (zim) that also plays well, but I may let it go if someone was really interested. it seems to be a one of a kind as noone can find it in a catalog. it has three shafts (2 schon and 1??) one schon shaft has ivory ferrule. I just like the feel of my dzuricky better. anyway....there are good and bad cues for everyone but most of them play very similar in results.

Oh i hear ya about going people going through many cues before they find one they like lol.

Trust me if i could do it all over again, i would have just stuck with my Schon, because it felt great, played like no other cue and of course was a LTD series, and have only seen 1 other person with the same cue and it was a lady on the WPBA playing on TV lol.

I would love to buy another Schon, but i dont feel like forking over 1000$ again lol

Plus, ya gots to remember, the cue doesn't make the shooter - the shooter makes the cue.

Later, Pel :)

Hey Dave,

I think you are experiencing something that everyone has gone through. It is almost the "Grass is always greener on the other side" deal. I notice that whenever I pick up a cue that is different than mine I may like the hit but I don't realize that it takes time to realize whether you like something or not. But it always gets you thinking and sometimes you make impulse moves and realize it was wrong.

I think you should do some experimenting. Go somewhere where you can try out the cues for a little while or find people at the pool room that will let you try out their cues. And by a little while I mean more than one rack. Try out shots that you shot well with your other cue or your signature safety. That way you can find out how things relate to your other cue.

The idea about playing with a predator shaft is good if you plan on switching cues on a regular basis. The shaft keeps things consistant. But it takes time to get used to the predator. I agree with your friend. The combination of a predator shaft and a steel joint is a great one. A friend of mine used a Schon with a Predator and it played incredible.

Don't be afraid to venture into the custom cue market. You can find good deals on some cues. They may be lesser known cue makers but they have great playing cues.

So I guess the moral of this story is not to settle for something until you are sure or if you are pressured into it. Take your time and you will find the right match. Don't be afraid to be picky.

Take care,
Sarah

Sarah and everybody,

Yes i know what you mean about the new cues, lol. Well i am picking up a New 5280 cue next week Weds. The pool hall i play at( golden 8ball ) just got the cue in today, and i put some money down on the cue to hold it.

From what the owner ( fred ) said about the cue was that its thier brand new Sneeky Pete. I did hold the cue and stroke it many times and just swing the cue around, but didnt hit anything. But it feels very balanced which is a nice feeling :)

But i did check out the 411 on the 5280 cues and i like the fact that they use Hard Maple for thier shafts which should give me the hit i am looking for.

Now i have never used the Tiger tips, But the same friend of mine who recommended the Predator shaft and steel joint, said that Tiger tips are the best layer'd tips around if you keep them shaped.

Now i have heard good and bad things about the layed tips lol.. Good--- they give you more english, while doing less, and dont mushroom as easily.

Bad-- very hard so miss cues happen more if you dont hit solid, and the tip goes to crap when the layers get compressed.

I have heard good things about the 5280 cues as well. A few people at the pool room I play out of just ordered the same cue you are talking about. They haven't received them yet so I can't tell you how they play. I know when Cory Deuel was using that cue he had some of the other players in Ohio using the cue as well. They all had Predator shafts, but said they were very happy with the cue.

As for the Tiger tip, I have never used one. I know that they have different names for the tips according to hardness. I think the standard hardness for a tip on a cue is Medium. You shouldn't have any problems with the layers. Usually layered tips play better when they are compressed or broken in.

Please let us know what you think of the cue. Good luck.

Sarah

5280 cues ehh? i wonder who originally came up w/ that idea at this pool hall
you speak of :(. It might have been a "used to be fuzzy" individual who thinks they can play one pocket. Hmm maybe? Yea i really wanted to try those out. I mean itd be nice if Aug. would finally order them. Lazy freaky deeky Dutch bastard:(

for a production cue

I like schons and joss cues. I like how they hit and think they are similiar. I play with a schon that I really like a lot, and I just brought a sneaky from dz cues.

Have no plans of parting with the schon, love how it hits. I've owned mcdermotts, meuccis, scruggs, porper (one of I'd love to have back, even though I hated the hit), Joss East, schon, and a few others. The scruggs and schon played the best to me.I've settled on the schon. In my youth I'd buy and sell cues often, didn't really care what I played with as long as it had a tip I liked. I'm more picky these days, and a lot better player since I quit moving through cues.

I love the hit of a Schon with a Predator shaft. Ths past weekend, I hit with a Scruggs and loved more than my Schon. I dont know why. It might have been just the weight difference. Now I want a Scruggs.

It is probably the balance of the cue. I have never held a cue, that feels better in my hands than a Scruggs. The balance, when you are down on a shot, is just incredible.

Tim Scruggs is a great guy to deal with, also. :D

Well, guys,

Unless i change my mind, this comming April i am going to have me a Custom made Jacoby, I have always wanted to have a one of a kind cue, :) I have checked out thier web site and seen a couple of thier cues, and they look really nice.

I have also heard from several people i shoot pool with, that they have very nice cues too.

Plus since i live in the southwestern part of Michigan, i can easily drive there and talk to them about a cue also.

But anyways, i just cant wait till then :)

dave

Dave,

Good luck with the Jacoby. I think it is a great decision and you will be very happy. You will have to let us all know how you like it when you get it.

As for the Scruggs cues, they are great as well. I highly recommend them. You really can't go wrong with either choice.

Take care,
Sarah
