You guys probably think I'm mental here. But is there is any truth In this? I believe there is. I've only experienced it twice. First was a very early kenny murrell, and the other was a with an old masterstroke cue with an old jensen shaft, thay both played amazing well.unfortunately, I had to sell that shaft. The weird thing was, it didn't matter what other shaft I used with it. I couldn't get that feeling back. The magic was gone!! Most cues just play average,or very good. but occasionally, You will find something, that plays amazing.
I just wondered how many others have experienced this with different cues?

I played with Joey Spaeth’s Szamboti for a few years….I could draw 3/4 of a table farther with that cue that any other I owned.
……and I’ve had at least 25 of the top cues.

Had one snooker cue made by Harvey Rothwell….same thing.

Strongly agree. Feels great and like magic
at first. I think that’s built into cues to sucker us into buying them.
Some pretty well known sports psych's have studied the 'new equipment effect' and it IS real but not long lasting. A few yrs ago they let a few top women golfers pick out any putter they wanted. They all putted better for various physical/psych. reasons but the 'euphoria' of the new wand faded fairly quickly. Same thing happens in pool.

95% of that was in how you felt using it. It wasn't the cue itself but your higher awareness/enthusiasm while using it. I got to play with Buddy's own Meucci one time and i played out of my gourd with that thing. It wasn't the cue.

Yup, real but psychological (so fleeting). "New cue syndrome" is what I've heard it called.

Since it's psychological, I bet it can be stimulated psychologically, without the cue - maybe become part of the PSR. Good candidate for a psychological "trigger" or "anchor" like those suggested for summoning the zone.

Years ago when the USBA held their Nationals at the Derby City, Dieckman came with an almost finished 13oz cue that someone commissioned.
He allowed me to play with it for about an hour.
I lost sleep for about a year thinking about that cue. Finally I couldn't stand it any longer and asked him to build me one while sitting on his back porch.
He made 2 for me to pick from.
I liked them both, but they're not how I remember that other one.

Ya it could simply be that. But I think there's a chance that a certain feel could comply with a person's style and desires. And yes that desire is in the mind, but.....
How Much of This Game is Mental?

I mention Dieckman since he's the only cue builder I've spent time with.
He wanted to build a cue for George Ashby. He had tried a few times. Dennis had Georges cue dimensions/measurements. He had the numbers by the 1/2".

Since I live just a little over a 100 miles from George, Dennis gave me 5 or 6 butts and 4 or 5 shafts for George to play with.
George didn't like any of them well enough and gave them back.

It's a funny thing. You know Dennis cut these shafts from his most select choice blanks. Well I know that cause I own them now.

What tip did you use

Sort of like when you were single. The magic one, was the one you went home from the bar with that night. Funny how after a week or two, that magic all but disappeared.
Then why buy a cow when milk is so cheap?

In other words... Play with House Cues

I rarely disagree with you…but I’m adamant on this one. There were three Szambotis for sale around Blue Ash OH…this one wasn’t.
Joey had sold it when he got sick. I had to have it…I kept driving over till I caught him broke and weak.
My snooker cue was the same way…….I could do things I couldn’t do with other cues.

I also had a two wood that could go thirty yards farther than any driver I’d ever owned.
A putter put Lee Trevino in the HOF.
