Is This A Foul?

ok, i had the cue ball about 1/2" from the '8' ball, and i had to use the rake to make the shot. it was very thin, close to the short rail. i was worried about the cue ball coming off the rail quickly and causing the dreaded "double-hit".

here's my question:
i tried to hit it quick and pull out, and i made an effort to shoot the shot. but i made no contact at all with the cue ball because i pulled back so quick. i tried to shoot the shot, but made no contact whatsoever. is this a foul? or what is the right thing to do here?

A foul....?

No, not a foul. Embarassing? Yes. I've done it before too. Kinda like tripping when you know somebody is watching you walk. If you don't touch anything, it's not a foul. This is not baseball, so no strikes count. :)

If I understand it, Dcp, you didn't touch the cue ball with either your cuestick or with the bridge. That's not a foul. Whiffs count as a shot in golf, but not in pool. If, on the other hand, in whiffing at the cue ball, you moved the cue ball with the bridge, that's a foul.

Don't feel bad, there is not a good pool player alive that has not done that at least once, same on a golfer shanking an iron.
