Is this a joke, or is this for real?

Last night, we went to a local tournament, and there were posters advertising a party occurring this week seeking new membership for the USBDT.

Now, I'm pretty sports savvy, but I ain't ever heard of the USBDT. The logo is very similar to the red-white-and-blue patches worn by other sports organizations, like the PGA, very official-looking.

One can join, though, for 10 bucks a year. There are nice jackets and hats on sale that members can wear proudly, and you get a membership card to keep in your wallet.

My curiosity piqued, I felt kind of stupid going up to the management to ask them what sport was the USBDT. Well, it is the United States Beer Drinking Team. For $10 a year, the members receive 10 percent discount on all beers at participating sites.

Just when I think I have seen it all. Is this a joke, or is this for real? "Pick your favorite design and show your pride. Wear your team colors," it says. And they have a Hall of Fame. Here is the website: USBDT

what was keith's reaction to that jam? must have been priceless.

When I was in my early 20 or so (30 years ago) I was ask and joined the AAHA. If I remember correctly is was $5 for a life time membership. I still carry the card, just in case I ever need an excuse for poor behavior. I can't remember the last time I pulled it out. Guess I finally grew up.

According to that picture Keith and I both should get an honorary membership to the USBDT. :D

JAM - I remember some boring afternoon a long, long time ago where I saw the national beer drinking finals on TV. They actually had teams and each team had a member come forth (no pun intended) and have a race to drink a cup of beer. Similar to family feud. I think it was before I was even old enough to drink, but I remember thinking it was odd that it was on TV.

Cheers,
Regas

He didn't pay it too much attention, but I'm wondering if this is real and isn't a joke that it could be a prospective sponsor for some of the pool leagues, where pool players do drink beer when competing.

I was told that this "organization" is very popular in the Midwest. At Champion's in Laurel, MD, a participating site, all USBDT members are given a 10-percent discount on ANY beer for the duration of the one-year membership. On a USBDT member's birthday, they receive 2 hours of free pool and 5 appetizers. :p

Sixpack, that's too funny! I'd rather see a beer-drinking contest on ESPN, though, than the hot dog-eating competitions.

This organization, website and all, is promoting the consumption of beer. As corny as it may sound, they may be interested in investing monies in pool leagues, since most of these events occur in places where they serve alcohol.

I found it interesting that they are planning on making the bear drinking hall of fame in cincinnati, OH. I am from cincy and have never heard of such a thing. I usually listen to talk radio on a regular bases and I dont recall ever hearing of it yet. Of course the closer they get to building the HOF in cincinnati the more exposure it will get around here. I think it would be a great opportunity for players looking for sponsorship(Leagues) and promotion of leagues. This is very interesting and I'm going to ask around town for some answers.
lol...USBDT

I read about it in the paper a few months ago. They were impressed by the great German brewing tradition in Cincy. In the early 1900's there were hundreds of breweries around here.

The building I am in right now sits on the former Windisch hops farm in WestChester.

You may be right. I don't know how many members they have but they seem to be getting a lot of pub lately.

10 bucks a year ain't much but if you can get 100,000 or more members then you're taliking real money.

There was an article on Yahoo this morning about beer consumption falling. I guess my decision to cut back to a sixpack a week has industry-wide implications :)

I still think the problem is the smoking ban. People who smoke and hang out in bars drink beer because it's the cheapest thing you can get, but when you're drinking at home, you can drink any kind of liquor for virtually nothing compared to what you pay in a bar.
