is this cue any good? (helmstetter)

I think it is fashioned after billiard cues. There is a low price on it so you are not going to lose much.

Helmstetter

Helmstetter is pretty decent brand name, a friend of mine has one of their production type cues, and it's pretty decent, his isn't signed like this though...The wood pin coming from the shaft is a 3-cushion billiards cue design approach - they are also made like that by Kilby (checkout http://www.caromcues.com/).
It also looks like a straight taper, which is another feature of billiards cues I believe. Lotta cue builders & historians on this site who'd know more than I...
For the price, though, what the heck? I mean use it as kindling if you don't like it!

It looks pretty good to me, especially where it is at now, but of course, most of the bids come in the last 2 minutes of an auction. If you are careful
with joint, putting together, taking apart, and not leaving where something could fall on the pic, I think you would be okay. But, with a wood pin, I would be a little apprehensive about the pin getting bent to one side, or the threads of the pin getting chewed on some.

it has the wood pin that ive been dying for like my friends c.s.c edition.... but is the cue any good because the pin is in the shaft??? most pins are in the butt and not the shaft.. thanks

It's a carom cue, not a pool cue. This is used for playing billiards, 3 cushion, etc. It's probably shorter than a pool cue (55"- 57") and a whole lot stiffer. Usually they have a beefed up handle and joint. In fact, if you look at the pic, the shaft from the joint collar to the tip looks shorter than the handle.

Helmstetter is/was known for their production Billiards/Carom cues.

Do you play pool or caroms? It's not a pool cue.

unless you want to play 3 cushion billiards with it. stay away from it. i have a cue almost identical to it, same wooden pin on the shaft and it is for 3 cushion only and you will not like the taper of the shaft as it is very short. maybe 6 or 7 inches. reason for that is better carom control.......mike
