Is this decent lathe for shaft work?

just my 2 cents

So I guess there's no way out of getting a small one for shaft work, without blowing at least a grand?

You’re wrong about blowing a grand. I have been looking for about just shy of 2 years before I bought a Hightower Repair lathe for shafts and small work. I added a lot of items on it to do larger work but still the upgrades were more then what I paid for the lathe. Do it right save a few bucks and hit the internet. Craigslist, eBay, here and word of mouth. If you put the time in you will find the right deal. 8 months ago I had junk to build cues now I have 3 Hightower’s and a finishing lathe. You just have to look. Hope this helps. One more thing do buy junk!

I've made many thousands of dollars using this little Harbor Freight lathe. It will very easily do cleaning and polishing, tip installations, ferrules, and, with a little adaptation it can do re-wraps. Get them on sale for around 400.00 and acquire a 20% off coupon and it's down to less than 350.00 out the door.

Fact is, I've got 2 of them.

Dick,

I have looked at that lathe over a 100 times over the years. Always had that screwed on plate for the spindle bore, was always tempted to take it off, just to see, LOL.

Nice back bearing holder, I assume you made it?

Your killing me man, Harbor Freight 5.9 miles, I gave my Hightower away from not knowing if I wanted to be that busy. Urrrrrrrrrghhhhhhh:D

I seriously wanna thank all you guys for helping me out with your suggestions.

I see some nice looking lathes here but, I'd be using this outta my apt. Not exactly having a worktable to work off of. Another reason why I'm looking for a portable for retips and shaft conditioning.
