Is this fixable?

Hi all
I recently bought a new, but discontinued McDermott cue. While playing the other day the cue felt different. So, took it apart looking for the cause and found a 1-1/2" split inside the cue where the weight bolt is screwed in and is only visible with the weight bolt removed. This not just a crack but a noticeable split. Are these types of splits repairable or am I out of luck?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

i'm not a cue maker but it really shouldnt matter. first you should take it back to who you bought it from. even if its discountinued they should at least either refund your money or take it to mcdormett for you. discountinued or not, they warrenty thier product for life. even if the person you purchased it from won't exchange/refund or take it to mcdermott for you, you could contact them directly.

Hi Socks
Thanks fo rthe reply and the links. I know about Mcdermott's warranty and didn't explain myself well enough, as usual
The cue was bought from one of the large Canadian dealers, came what appeared to be as used....some blueing of the tip and it was only about half the height of other McDermoot tips I have seen new. They were horrible to deal with when calling them about it and denied it. But I guess my real concern is, if I send it back to McDermott will they simply shoot some wood gue in there and send it back. If so, it is worth it to me to "fight" with the Dealer.

well thats a question to ask yourself when dealing with any customer service in any industry..:p

i cann't really speak on behalf of any of the fine cue makers and repair people here nor for mcdermott, but if someone where to shoot some gue up in there and call it done, that would be a hack job and not worth wasting your time on.

it sounds like your describing damage like this:
http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=79297&highlight=meucci

if so, then that thread should answer your question. aside from that you just need to ask yourself is it worth it to you. if it was me, it would depend probably on the amount i had into the cue to begin with. if its liek $100 dollars, i'd say forget it, chalk it up to learning experiance and move on. if its one of their higher end cues in the $800+ range, that would definatly be worth fighting with them over and maybe even the cost of repair. but thats ultimatly your decision to make, either way, i'm sure it will be a headache i do not envy. g'luck with your endevor whichever you decide. :)

socks, your'e great. Thanks alot!
The cue is "only" $280 (cheap compared to the what the other maniacs here spend:eek: ). SO I guess it is off to McDermott and see what they do about it. Order a new cue (differnt model of course) from Neilson's to replace it :D

Thanks again for your help socks

Dealio

Please post the results of this when it all works out. Would like to know how McDermott handles this. Hopefully it's an easy fix and you come out with a shiny new old stock cue.

I think there is a post here about an issue that could happen similar to this, happens when you overtighten the weight-bolt or use one that does not fit properly. It could have very well been done before you got the cue seeing as how the shaft looked used. If I recall correctly, the crack is a fairly major problem, not solved with just glue.

Thanks again for the responses.
It is off to McDermott tomorrow. I'll post the result when I get it back.

It is a very easy to fix. I would bore out the butt to 3/4 and insert a dowel depending upon the weight desired I would use Purple Heart or Maple. Then I would epoxy the dowel in place in the hole I bored, and then bore a new hole for the weight bolt, thread it and your done. Any cue repairman should be able to do this with know problem. The cue will be as solid as ever after you are done. If you can not see the crack through the finish the butt will not need to be refinished. This will completely stabilize the crack permanently.

Prices will vary from person, but this is a simple job, in fact I am doing one as we speak. The cue is also a McDermott, the threads for the weight bolt were stripped out so this was the easy fix.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!

Jim, did you talk with anyone before you sent it?
Do they know exactly what you expect in the way of a repair?

Thanks for the info Manwon. By the way, I bought just bought a P7-01 to use in the meantime, while the other is being repaired, because you stated they were so nice :)

WilleeCue, yes I talked to someone at McDermott and they siad to send it in. He said they would fix it or if they can't they would make a new cue for me. He said I am lucky bacause they just started offering Spalted Maple again and my cue is the discountinued plain spalted M1-2J. i had forgotten about the new Spalted Frog cue and didn't think they could make more spalted cues.

Thanks again all who responded.
Computers and Networks are easy This wood stuff is nuts!!!!!

hi All
Got the cue back from McDermott. They fixed it just like Manwon said. Drilled it out and plugged it. Kinda wanted a new cue, the idea of a "fixed" brand new cue irks me if I think about. But, it plays just like it did, can't notice a thing so....
They also didn't charge to do the work, one gentleman hinted at the $21.95 charge but that didn't go over to well and he didn't push the idea.

Mc Dermott does not warranty all thier cues I beleive any post 2003 cue produced is covered. Also if not purchased from an authorized McDermott dealer they have the right not to warranty Its good they warrantied it though
