is this the best weekly tourney in the country?

let me tell you about a weekly tourney we have here in des moines iowa. it is held at big dog billiards, a great place with over 40 tables. 16 of the tables are diamond bar tables with the tougher pockets( not the buckets like at bca in vegas).

every week we have had a weekly tourney that consistantly gets over 30 players. The last 4 weeks we have averaged over 40. the entry fee is 15 bucks and the house adds 5 per player and there is no green fee or quarters.

the races are 6 on the winners side and 5 on the losers side. the game is 9ball winner breaks.

we have a calcutta every week. this week was higher than normal with over $330 in it.

we have had a few pros come play. Players like baraks, vilmont and jesse boweman have all made the trip to play and jamie and chad come 10-12 times per year to play in it.

anybody have a weekly tourney that sounds better than this? great equipment, good payout and good competition.

Sounds very cool except that pros or top roadies should have to give the filed at least one on the wire.

Regards,
Jim

ride the nine out in bloomington illinois has a 32 player pool every week, and features ike runnels regularly....There are other really good money players out there, but I don't want to hurt their action much.....

Best weekly Tournament, in my area ( holland, michigan )goes like this.

20 Entry Handicap

500$ added with 32, but owner pro-rates the added if its not 32 players, but generally they get 32-40 players.

7ft tables. Race to 7w 5L

handicap goes like this C- vs C player C- gets the last two, B vs C player C player gets the Wild 7. B+ vs C C player gets the break and Call 7. C player vs A- C player gets the breaks and call 6. Anyone a skill level under someone else IE B- vs B they get the last two. If its like a B- vs B+ they get the wild 8.

The tournament generally is filled with C- to B+ players, but local studs like Juan Garcia and Richie Richeson play, both of them are AAA players who give up the handicap and games on the wire too.

The pay out is normally about 300$ or more for 1st depending on how many people show up and the calcutta ranges from 400-600$ for first.

Also, if your thinking about trying to sneak in to steal the tourny, lol, good luck, guys get ratted out faster than you can get your cue outa the case. The one thing that sucks is, if your a newbie, you get way over rated, for the first week or three! So even if you cant hold a cue your get rated a B or higher.

You mean twice a WEEK they add 500 bucks? that is huge. what are the race to? that sounds incredible. that is the winner so far. what kind of equipment and is the tourney well run?

Yes $500 added twice a week with only 20 players. Race track still matches pot if less.

Friday tournament is handicapped 9ball. Not too bad though, but at least gives the lower players a chance to place in the money. APA 1-3 go to 2. APA 4-6 go to 3. APA 6-7 go to 4. APA 8-9, unknown, and road players go to 5. The spot isn't unfair at all to a good player.

Saturday is non-handicapped, 8 ball, race to 3.

As you know Mike I've been to your tournament, and it is amazingly good, imo. Got to play Jamie Baraks my one time.

The only other weekly I've been to that rivals (rivaled?) it was the weekly at Airway Billiards in Dayton OH. I have no idea how much was added, etc. But it was a FIVE dollar entry, race-to-three (two on the B-side) 9-ball tournament that regularly attracted forty players who took it seriously. The low money didn't seem to matter at all. B players played it every week for years with a claim-to-fame being they once finished 5/6 or something. The week I was there (8 or 9 years ago) featured cuemaker Sherm Adamson, Steve (Cookie Monster) Cook, Jason Miller, Gary Spaeth, and many other straight shooters. Anyone know if it's still going strong?
