Is "waxing" pool table cloth good?

Waxing pool table cloth using spray type car wax is a trend in many pool halls in my country. Is this a proper cloth maintenance method? Years ago, someone got the idea from the Taiwanese pool halls. Since then it has been an accepted method. Especially before a tournament.

I personally think that by waxing the cloth, it will affect the roll of the ball. Especially when spin is applied.

I want to hear it from the expert.

I don't think it should be done, but as long as everyone is playing on the same table, I guess at least it is fair.

I would imagine the table would play far differently at the beginning and end of the day though. Then again, you see the same thing at pool tournaments, when balls get dirty/ sticky as the day gets late.

What country are you, please? Always cool to have international members and info about their billiards scenes...

I am from Malaysia. There are many nice pool halls around and many of them is using simonis cloth, taiwan and china made table.

I don't think it should be done either... Wax will seal in the chalk dust and it will not vacume out.

It seems obvious to me that there's a group of players that like to or are trying to maintain the slide of a new cloth. If this is the case I'd suggest once a week on a public table a very light coating of silicone but as mentioned this too will hold chalk dust so you'll need to be diligent with keeping the table cleaned. Another way is car wax on the balls. This will have to be applied after each game. The drawback to this is the game keeps changing from start to finish as the wax slowly but surely wears off.

This advice is only for those that like the balls to slide. 3C players are among this group.

Do you think automotive polish has the same effect as the wax or is it just the silicone in the wax? I use polish to clean my (wish I could think of a more appropriate way of saying this) balls.

welcome to the forum. Pleased to have you join us...and we would love to see pictures of the billiard world in Malaysia.

As a sidelight you could always try some laundry spray starch. And as a finishing touch finish it up by ironing the cloth.

Good quality car wax will make the balls very slick. I'd do this instead of the cloth.
If silicone is in just the wax I'd say it will come off in a few minutes.

Silicone on the table will last a week or two depending on how much play and how well you keep it clean. A private table it lasts a month or more. Again depending.
Another benefit since we're reducing the friction between ball and cloth, your cloth will last longer too.

If you choose silicone Do Not Use Heavy Duty. Use general purpose. And use it sparingly. Spray a cloth 3 or 4 seconds then basically drag it over the table. No real downward pressure needed. Many don't do the rails. It will transfer from the bed.
