The Huffington post today has a story about guns in bars and restaurants and how bad an idea it is. It has something to do with a new law in Tennessee allowing guns in bars. So what picture do they use to depict this dangerous bar where people will be carrying guns. A guy holding a pool cue with a cigarette hanging off his fingers and pool tables in the background. It sounds like nothing but it creates yet another subliminal image in the readers mind. bars=pool=guns=violence=bad.
This will never never change.

Yup, not a guy who's NOT drinking, just having dinner with his family in a place that ALSO serves alchohol.

The Place is robbed, or a psycho decides this is the place for a shooting spree, and the man is ABLE to DEFEND himself.

Instead it's allowing scumbag poolplayers to be armed, and shoot each other ovr any trivial tiff. In fact this law will make it LEGAL for them to shoot anyone they want, at any time. :withstupid:

Images such as that make it extremely difficult for those of us that are out there trying to introduce the positive part of the game into school, Boy's & Girl's club, and YMCA programs.

I say we flood the editor's inbox with positive stories about pool.

The thing is, The picture has nothing to do with the story subject. The guy editing the piece needed a picture so he pulls a stock picture and that is the first thing that comes to his mind? To him that picture represent in no words, bars and violence then you are introducing now guns, =bad. I remember when I was buying a pool room the attorney who was handling it for me saying, "aren't you afraid of all the fighting and possible guns and drugs"?
This was an intelligent man and his only perception of a pool room was it must be a place where people carry guns sell drugs and there is fights all the time. This "IS" what the public think about when they think about pool.

You only figured that out NOW? :)

Go back 100 years "As a kid, Louis Armstrong used to hang out in pool rooms hustling." Check out old movies, the black and white ones, and where do the scum crooks hang out, in pool rooms, usually downstairs to a hole in the wall with a variety of scum loitering outside. So no, pool's image will never change.

Even today, with most of those old-time hustlers gone and faded into infamy, the game still attracts quick-buck hustlers, gamblers, and kids who quit school to play pool. The game still rife with me -first moochers who don't care about the beauty of the game but rather as a vehicle to make a lazy buck.

I think the main problem with pool is video games. There is one kid besides me in my high school that actually plays pool. Granted there are only maybe 350 kids in it, probably 150 of those kids play video games at least 20 hours a week. Kids won't play pool because it takes more time to learn and be good at, so they give up because they're lazy, and what do they do next, go home turn on their little xbox 360 and play halo 3 till mommy calls them up for supper.

I need to come clean here. As a pool player, I don't smoke but I do carry twin .45s in my shoulder holsters when I play. Also, the shaft on my cue doubles as a scabbard for my 24" katana sword. I'll be damned if I am gonna let a guy walk away from me owing me $5.00!!!! :D
