It's 2009 ... what are we all playing?

So what do you think will be the game of choice in three years time? With 9-ball competing with IPT 8-ball and new 14.1 events including the World Championship, are we looking at a fundamental shift at the League level and at the pro level away from 9-ball?

Well first of all most leagues don't play 9-ball. I don't think that will change much. Maybe just better tables.

I think the IPT will add 9 ball once they become established.

Its the game of the Future. Just ask Vincent

In 2009 we will see a few new pool variants come to the forefront, including 35.1 Continuous, 1-Ball, No-Pocket, and Seven-Cushion Billiards.

Seriously, though... I think 8-Ball, 14.1, and One-Pocket will continue to grow at the pro levels.

1-Ball and No-Pocket??? I have a feeling I could take on any member in this forum at thsoe two games!!!!

Where I play all you see really is 9 ball and one hole. Some straight. Me and my shootin partner have been playing a lot more 8 ball I think with all the ITP buzz. Im sure a lot of people are looking at that game with dreams of future $$ in their eyes. I think the ITP will make a big load of money trying to get in. I know I wouldnt have a chance if I got in but heck Im still gonna try to get in one day. All the games are so different but I think 9 will stick, but I think we will see a rise of 8 ball in the pool halls.

This made me laugh loud enough that people are staring at me from other cubicles. Well played, juanbond. Well played.

I think I'm going to head to the pool hall and see if anyone wants any of my no-pocket action. Can I get a complete set of rules?

It's funny you should ask...

My friends and I often get a little loopy after a long session of snooker or 8ball, and sometimes toy around with joke variants of pool. No-Pocket is something we've actually attempted to play on a couple of occasions. Basically, you win when your opponent pockets any ball (including the cueball). A legal shot is one in which the cueball strikes at least two balls, and at least one ball (cueball or object ball) is driven to a rail, post-first-contact.

The game often progresses with players lagging balls close to pockets, in the hopes that their opponent accidentally caroms one in. Pretty silly game, but hey, we are silly guys.

After all, in ten years a guy who scores heavy on stocker is a shoo-in at the point!

Well this is just my own speculation but three years from now I think we will see eight ball become a bit more popular and nine ball a bit less popular, mainly because of the IPT. I also think that no-pocket will take off:D

8-ball. Amateurs have played 8-ball through the times of 14.1 and 9-ball professional play. Now that 8-ball is becoming stronger among the pros, a lot of amateurs will continue playing 8-ball as if nothing changed.

Very good points. I'm going to side with Fred on this one.

Yep, Fred hit the nail on the head I think. Probobly more "Players" will be playing 8-ball than are currently but as far as bar players and such there will be no change.

Yesss!!! Sounds like we have a possible No-Pocket national league in the works! I have to warn you all, though... I'm perhaps the top No-Pocket road player in existence. I once shot 528 consecutive no-pocket shots without sinking a single one.
