Otherwise pool is too low class to ever have a chance for mass appeal. Anything sustainable would require the hero and heel approach or a total revamp of American pool.
Most won't pay for the current product on a pay stream. I sure wouldn't travel to watch this crap. Handicap it and wagering. Maybe. Fleming's make it happen model is pretty good. In its 4th year.

The hero/heel approach was done with snooker, too, aka playing off the bad boys (Higgins, White and even O'Sullivan) against the squeaky clean Davis and Hendry or old guard players. The drama of characters and back stories. It could work, and Hearn is the only guy who has been able to bottle it and sell it. I, too, would drive a long way to see a Snooker tourney like you describe...

Well, let me clarify..."Pot Black" started in 1969, was very popular, but was not tournament coverage. TV coverage of snooker as we know it today started with all three majors being televised in 1984. The World Championship only televised the finals before 1980.

Snooker became popular when Alex Higgins showed everyone it could be exciting. This was a looong time before hearn and betfred. It has been a housewives favourite since the 70s.

I agree with you. Pool needs a makeover, the sport needs to shake off it's reputation as a game for gangsters and other shady characters.
