The winner of the darts world championship gets $50000 more money that the winner of the 9 ball world championship.

go figure..................... always thoughts darts was for pansies no matter how small of a dot they can hit at 12 ft. :):):)

Well Im a fan of darts like in a leisure time blowing way........to burn time I'll toss some of them...........but for all that cash just to hit a circle instead of having to run 150 and out............not much skill if you ask me.....

hm.. interesting, no-one compared darts to pool yet on here that I ran across. It's always golf, and I like to use shooting. Anyone a top or a good dart player? How much practice does it take? Seems the focus must be pretty close to billiards to keep your hand steady. Anyone know of any long-term dart money matches?

BTW.. on wikipidia, if you look for images of pool, the are in a "precision sport" catagory with golf and shooting. Not sure why people don't use rifles as pool comparisons, the skills you need are pretty similar. I like the "precision sport" thing, makes it more technical and difficult that baseball and such.

I used to play a lot of darts and those top players are amazing. The fact that they can do it holding a beer nearly non-stop all day is even more impressive. But it does take alot of practice to refine your skill. Unfortunately I am a better dart player than pool player and better golfer than either. I would much rather run 150 balls than shoot a 67 or have a 12 dart out. I can do the wrong two of three.

That's interesting, but not really a surprise here. IMO its the same old story. Its a much simpler game to understand and play, and subsequently become interested in, and at least play well enough at, that you don't have to feel awkward trying it in public.

You can hang a dart board just about anywhere, so the game is accessible to more people. It's cheaper to buy your equipment, its a far more sociable game than pool, and on and on.

I'm sorry, but our loved game comes from a seedy misunderstood subculture, and its so difficult to coordinate yourself to play that it's practically impossible to play or understand if you've never been exposed to it, so it stands to reason far fewer people become involved before they become frustrated or turned off by it.

The larger potential audiences for darts justify the larger sponsored purses.

Someone posted in an earlier thread that they thought 8 ball would be a much better game to televise. I think that would be one step forward if the goal was to involve more neophytes. I believe TV is the first best exposure. Amateur challenges is a concept that I think could be explored more also.

Another thing I think 8 ball needs to do to become popular is to distance itself from the damned beer leagues. IMO whatever popularity it is currently gaining is all in the wrong direction when it is so closely associated with drinking, drunks, and bars. And before anyone gets defensive, I'm speaking from a prior poolroom owners point of view. I hated league nights myself even though they were a necessary evil to keep the business going.

Another, idea that I think would go a long way to help would be putting pool rooms in large indoor shopping malls with large pane glass windows so more folks could initially be exposed to the game without having to venture into a poolroom, which can be intimidating.

The entire game needs a fresh approach if its going to try to attract the masses and it won't work one pool room in one town at a time. Frankly and practically, I don't see it happening any time soon.

A sad paradox since its beautiful depth and intricacy is it's own undoing.

pool is really in the dumps in america. It wouldnt surprise me if the crochet champion makes more than a pool champion.

the allure of darts is the live beer fueled football like atmosphere. my best mate is a big darts fan and a good player and he tells me that when he goes to watch the darts, nobody really watches the darts. everybody's just having a great time chanting and cheering and getting drunk!

i can't wait to go!

philthepower.com <---------this guy is the Efren,Tiger Woods of darts, I have been watching him for years, everyone is just playing for second place

I know that you were just making a funny statement when you said this but I was talking with a Pro Players and he said something that amazed me. He was disturbed that he watched the "cup stacking championships" and they won $50k. FOR CUP STACKING! Most Pro events do not pay that much and it was televised.

that should be the way pool matches are! i think the europeans bring that hooligan aspect to dart because they go to pubs all the time and play and they cheer like they're watching a soccer match. The people sweating a pool match have to make quiet and not move, like they're standing by the putting green watching a golf match.

Worriedbeef, I did not see that post before but I wonder if backgammon players have to get up everyday and go practice. Seriously nothing against backgammon just like yourself, but how the hell do you go to a sponsor and say we are televising backgammon we need $10,000? That is just as unbelievable as the Cup stacking.

That's a shame and the sad part is there doesn't seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel for pool sponsors and payouts.......

Here is the thing... pool isnt in the dumps... there are millions of folks who play in structured competitions every single week. How much revenue do you think the guys over had Mcd generate each year... better yet how many millions does Tai Kai.. (or whatever the china monster plant is called) make in a year...

The problem isnt with pool .. pool is just fine......

The problem is that the cats at the top are fat ...sure they would love a pool boom to hit so they can make more money...but they dont have to be active in making it happen.. their pockets are already full.

I guess my view on the darts thing is very similar to the GP's view of pool...
" I cant believe there is such a thing a PRO dart player.. it's a freaking board game for crying out loud.. what's next a Candyland champ pulling in 50 large".....
