What is the downside to having a cue with and Iv. joint and or iv. ferrule?

Someone else mentioned that they play 14/1 with an ivory joint but prefer delrin or other joint material for playing 8 & 9 ball.

Ivory Joint & Ferrule

I been playing with a ivory joint on my cue and ivory ferrule on my shaft for approx. thirty years, for me there is no down side. Proper cue maintanence will help the ivory from cracking. This is my personal opinon.

I agree, no downside. You just have to take care of them, they're more fragile than tough plastics.
:p

Downside, not as strong as other materials. Can be harder to keep clean. More expensive to purchase and repair.

I do, however, feel there are more upsides than downside though.

Most of my favorite playing cues are ivory joint & Ferrule. I won't break my hardest with them, but a soft break works better for me anyway.

good one

Back to the topic. Is it wrong (morally) to use Ivory in cues?

this ranks right up there with my inclination to discuss religion or
government.

I merely added some possible downsides depending on the buyer's
preference. hence "what soapbox?"

delrin is most emphatically NOT a joint material. it's used in the bumper because of it's resilience, but it lacks any responsive properties to be any good whatsoever as a joint = it's dead material.

there is no "downside" to ivory, imo. people get it for exactly what it delivers, unlike delrin which has an upside(it's durability) and a downside(it does not glue well). using it as a joint is a non-factor because no one does.

To me Ivory is more a decorative material than a stable joint or ferrule material. It's expansion and contraction in my opinion precludes it from major stress points on a cue, unless it is cored. Many people love the soft hit of an Ivory ferrule. Some of the old timers also believe that Ivory ferrules can enhance the spin / action you can get on a cue ball and this may be true. But, today many people do not take the proper care of their equipment, such as, leave their cues in their car, and other places without temperature control. (I fix these problems all the time)

Ivory, will not handle this treatment well, in fact it will destroy it, which can be very expensive to fix. However, if you decide to use it, keep it temperature controlled to the best of your ability. Do not allow finish to be put on the Ivory used in a joint, because it must be allowed to breath in order to maintain its strength. Last of all, to keep it flexible, you should wipe it down with a good mineral or high grade olive oil periodically. This is because if it is allowed to completely dry out it will become brittle and crack, just like the old billiard and pool balls.

Hope this helps

Have a good night

ivory ferrul

i have a couple cues with ivory ferruls and it seems to me that the ivory deflects more. there are a couple of shots that really gave me problems with the ivory ferruls. i stopped playing with those cues. anyone have any input on this??

wtf

All I have to say is IVORY made POOL what it is today. Sell all your cues with ivory and remember you can't charge for the ivory. You'll be happy to have bad luck because that is the only luck you'll get. How many Ivory haters prefer Tree Moss to meat? Plug that electic car in to save the envirment too... Do you speak out against the war too... Id bet yes bet guns cause the problems too. There is just more Ivory, Suv's,and guns for the rest of us. Slow left lane drivers suck too. And if you think you can use a cell phone and drive. You all are sadly mistaken. And the only people I want to meet from this chatline are the ones going in the opposite direction of the ol-timers that have conformed.

Sorry if you don't want to step up when someone (who I grudgingly come to respect on the boards for his knowledge and grit) personally boasts of shooting 14 elephants for sport.

Anyways, Ivory on the plus side is very easy to maintain, plays beautifully and looks even better.

Thankfully, Mammoth Ivory has all the same characteristics without the moral dilemma.
