Feel and value. Some say there are better materials. Nonsense. Too each his own
ivory stays nice and clean after you polish it,to me that would be the biggest positive.they also have a nice hit.
also some guys grew up playing with 1" ivory ferrules and are used to the higher deflection and actually like the higher deflection.many of the nice older cues were 1" ivory ferrules and some people like the look and the play of them.
i actually like something lighter,smaller and stronger,but as Dave said,to each his own.

Different materials all have different 'feel' characteristics. Mostly, ivory is just 'cool' to have on a cue. 
Personally, I consider ivory ferules to be a liability in a playing cue. The higher deflection, maintenance and expense are things I can do without in a cue that I play with on a daily basis. Also, ivory is not as durable in the long term as synthetic materials. Granted there are probably lots of players that have been firing away with an ivory feruled shaft for years, but those I think are exceptional cases, rather than the norm.
Ivory joints are fine and I actually like them. I had a Barrenger cue with ivory ferules, joint and butt cap with a G10 pin. That was a phenomenal cue to shoot with and made my game better because it forced me to develop a smoother stroke. The feel of that thing was just awesome and I wish I saw more of Joes work.

I love my ivory ferrules on my Scruggs. Some time ago I had a chance to hit with a Cognoscenti with both the regular ferrule and an ivory ferrule. I felt that ivory ferrule provided a crisper hit and I liked it more. The Cogno owner on the other hand liked the regular ferrule more. So the hit issue is subjective (as always) but for me the ivory ferrule did the trick. I don't believe ivory joint would make such a big difference in the hit.
The hit and the value. I had a schon with ivory joint and ferrule. i loved the way that thing hit. Ive still got the joint but im shooting with predator now. I also love the way good ivory looks.
CSWANN1 is right about the deflection. Ivory is about the heaviest material you might make into a ferrule, also its grain may allow for greater deflection too. I watched several cues on the Meucci robot perform badly with ivory ferrules.
I learned to aim using a cue with ivory ferrule. It is my opinion that there is a different feel to it and I have learned to prefer that feel. Not better or worse, just my preference.
