a friend of mine just a new cue with an ivory joint, now here is the question, when the shaft is screwed on it has to be done up tighter then any other cue i have come across to the point that it distorts the ring work on his 314, does the ivory need to be faced off, is this normal with ivory or what do you think

the collar seems to bulge out on the shaft, i had to apply a lot of pressure to the joint to stop it rattling when striking cue ball, this is a custom cue.

i am confused as well.you forced it on so tight that it actually distorted phenolic.that should never happen.

joint

have all pred shafts got phenolic collers , if so then i must be wrong and the shaft is bigger than the butt

When the cue was bought did your friend tell the CB he was going to use a Pred shaft? Most CBs want the shaft so they can match.
