Ivory v. steel joint

Hello All:

I am having a cue made and really like an ivory joint.

Could it still be a wood to wood; or does the ivory totally surround the pin?

Aside from personal preference re hit, look and feel; are there any advantages either way?

I would not run the 5/8" hole all the way through the Ivory nor would I allow the Ivory to touch the joint pin. I would double step it from 5/8" half way through down to .400" to .450" the rest of the way. That has been the strongest method I have used. Ivory plays better than Stainless in my opinion.

There are several different types but stick with the flat faced ivory joint with a big pin thread like a 3/8 x10..........the ivory completely surrounds the pin
and the shaft faces are flat wood face that's been cored to accept the thread.....best playing joint around in my opinion....and you should think about going
a little lighter in cue weight.....also go with ivory ferrules.....7/8 - 1" length........you'll be pleased you did.
