Ivory vs Phenolic

Was wondering exactly how much softer an ivory joint is than an implex joint? And what is ya'lls opinions about how one hits versus the other? I realize that is really subjective but just trying to get a feel for the two :) Seems like I see a lot more phenolic/implex joints than ivory ones even on custom cues.

I am no expert in ivory but I always feel that an ivory joint is indeed harder than a phenolic joint. Any comment?

Thank you.

ivory is just harder and crisper. like any hard surface, it's effect would be to propel the cb better and sharper than something softer(phenolic). the softer the elements of a cue the more absorbtion of impact. ie,,,,if you want really hard hitting cues, you add only hard elements to it. hard tip, hard ferrule, hard joint, hard butt, hard rubber bumper. all this adds up to the final feel of the hit.

so, hard joint(ivory) as opposed to a softer one(phenolic) is merely one element that contributes to the hit.

Capped-ivory hits much better imo.
Phenolic after all is a melted product.
For a sleeve, imo staghorn is the best.

Ah... so it looks like I was wrong and the phenolic is the softer of the two joints? Never hit with an ivory and was looking at buying a new cue and trying to figure out which way to go. Gotta learn at some point. :D

I am no expert on ivory, so please take this with a grain of salt.
I have found that ivory ferrule and ivory joint usually offer a harder hit. I feel that ivory joint is a bit more sensitive and crisp as well, but that could just be the result of the taper and the balance and factors like that which also contribute to the hit.

Ah, thank you :) That's the kind of information I'm looking for. My current cue has a stainless steel joint and I'm looking at trying out one of the others and would like something a little "softer" so to speak.

As far as hardness of joints, implex is the softest next would be phonelic then ivory and hardest would be stainless. I beleive ivory and melamine would be pretty close to each other.
