Ivory............

Bava,

I apologize. I must be stupid. I can't decipher from your last
post what side of this discussion you fall on. Please explain to
me what facts in my last post were wrong. What facts did I ignore?

Thanks
Joe

The entire pool community should take these facts to heart:

Elephants feel, protect and provide for their families and are highly intelligent.
(probably smarter than humans)
Do we place value on their tusks because of these facts?
Where does the value come from-the difficulty of obtaining such a thing
If that's the case -

Humans are pretty smart and have accomplished outstanding things throughout the millennia-
Should it be my joy to knock out some guy,
then pry out his eye teeth and make 'em in to something pretty,
then cut off his ears to make my cue wraps?

We are stupid, selfish and wasteful because we know how cognizant the things around us are, yet we continue as though we know nothing, justifying it from the bible,
"it says we have dominion over the beasts."

You also have dominion over your own actions,
doing the right thing when the right thing is called for.

feigning ignorance for the sake of a dollar is sad when I know you know...

I think everyone here that is against ivory in cues is just ignorant to the fact that the use, sale, whatever of pre-ban ivory isn't contributing to the current slaughter of elephants and doesn't benefit the poachers in anyway.

This is ivory that has been in our country for decades. It is a rare product now as no more can be imported or exported and eventually will completely dry up. There is absolutely no point in outlawing the sale of pre-ban ivory... regardless of the feelings of the current slaughter of elephants.

There is no reasoning with the ignorant. This is my last post in this thread.

Methane contributing to climate change

Also, there was a news article today about the additional
methane being produced by the ponds of an excessive
numbers of beavers. The excessive numbers of beavers are
a result of lawful protections that hadn't existed before.

im all for protecting the elephants..but for the ivory thats here and is pre ban...why the hatred..its done and over with..avoiding a cue thats already made with ivory will not change anything..the real issue with it is overseas...and for all people saying dont buy ivory because its slaughter..how about you steer away from diamonds as well since a good amount of them are blood diamonds from overseas and human lives are lost to get them...if its banned completely all thats going to do is drive up the price and make it.more desirable..and that means more profitable business for poachers..

Joe.....How About......

Joe,

It would be great to discuss over a couple of beers and just as an illustration, I'll elaborate more on the Rhode Island example. The shoreline naturally changes because of severe storms, such as hurricanes, that occur. That's a given but it's not the storms that are the issue here......we're talking global warming and ocean water elevation......allow me to be sound a little redundant......FACTS.

How about the rate of "global" sea level rise estimated from observations with satellite altimetry:

1961 - 1993, the avg. annual rate of seal level rise: 1.8 mm (± 0.5 mm yr)

1993 - 2003, the avg. annual rate of sea level rise: 3.1 mm (± 07mm yr)

Betcha the 2003 -2013 period after review and analysis will reveal a larger annual avg. rise in global sea levels. i.e., it's happening much faster.

Wanna do the same thing with hydrocarbons, temperatures, pollutants, etc.? There are lots of facts but they tend to get in the way of any meaningful discussion of the issues at hand. Let's both just go our separate ways and accept that we'll never agree on a starting point since empirical data sets are very important, significant considerations for me.
