J&J Break Cue

My experience after 24 hours...

I always broke with an old stiff McDermott, and wondered why I wasn't getting much success on the break. I still wasn't convinced that a break cue was the answer, so I tested the waters with a new J&J jump break from "poolguy4u" for a very reasonable $58.

Pulled the cue directly out of the plastic last night with nothing to lose. I've never dropped an 8 on the break in league play. Last night I did it twice. The best part is that my opponent is a real pouter when he's losing, so when the second one dropped he lost the tiny bit of self control he had left.

Call it luck, but that's pretty good product test results. It doesn't feel "cheap" and it hits like a hammer. I'm going to pass on the $300+ break cues until this thing explodes.

It's all luck. A good break is not the 8 or 9 dropping, it's getting a ball in and getting shape on the next shot which depends on how good the rack was put together, where it's located on the table, how well you hit it on the right spot and at the correct speed.

I had a nice J&J I won in a raffle take from a bar when my son used it and did not put it back in my case. Don't miss is too much aside from the fact that it was also a jump cue which came in handy at times. Good thing my son has his to use when I need it.

I really like mine. Of course, I have no practical experience with any of the "better" models out there.

Everyone that uses it likes it too. Works fairly well for jumping, full length (can't use short jump cues in APA) given my limited ability with jump shots.

Certainly can't beat the bang for the buck, in any event.

Yep, had a $300 J/B cue and a J&J J/B. Sold the $300 one and use the J&J. Took the big weight bolt out of mine and liked it much better.

Not sure what or where you play. If the magic rack is allowed I would give it a try. I just bought one because last week playing BCA 9 ball. My opponent was using the magic rack and pretty much made the same ball in the rack in the corner every time. I can't say I like the magic rack because of this but if my opponent is going to use one then so will I. He did offer for me to use it. So while a break cue can make a difference. They can be expensive. Magic racks are fairly cheap.

I love mine, it destroys racks and jumps great. My only problem is the joint comes lose.

Agreed, but If your kicking the 8 or 9 around on the break then you're probably getting some decent ball movement. I'm also getting more balls up table which obviously creates a lot more space to work with. I have noticed guys that don't break with a lot of power and still drop balls consistently. I'm not one of those guys...

I have heard that the old J&J Sneaky Petes were the ultimate in bargins.

I don't even know if they make them anymore.

While it is a superb bargain and is certainly more than enough for breaking and jumping, I didn't quite like having different diameters between my playing and breaking cue, so I opted to separate up the cue tasks.

What kind of tip does the J&J come with?

There are two different types of tip/ferrules used on J&J break shafts.

One with a plastic ferrule and a phenolic tip.
One with a one piece phenolic tip & ferrule.

I suggest getting the one piece, as the ferrule material is super soft and will degrade over time.

I'll second that. Mine came with the cheaper version, and it was fine for a year and half, not just me using it but some friends as well. Then the tip popped off.

My local guy put a new phenolic tip on it, but it wouldn't take. We tried it a few times before he gave up and put a one piece ferrule/ tip on it. That combo is awesome.

My big issue was when my shaft slid across the cloth. Instead of the tip & ferrule leaving burn marks in the cloth, the ferrule was so soft it was melting from the friction.
