Is Jimmy Reid still living? Falcon eddie you said you saw Toby Sweet. Could it be possible someone close to these guys show them this story and verify they were or were not the Augusta Hippie. I was told by one that was there he was from delaware. Reid I read is from Mass. so this sounds close to the man.

They woul have to remember some of this story and some of the people invloved. It would be gratifying to put a name and face on one of the greatest pool battles in pool history.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The side banter it generated is more fun to read imop than CTE and who has the stiffest shaft. You folks need to post these experiences, more of us would like to see it more than you think.

Got some more info on these times of the this hippie. He said it was around 1972 when the hippie came to augusta he the hippie was about 5ft9 or 10 and came with other man around 6'3" and an asian woman. He thinks the hippie was from delaware. He said his hair was about shoulder length not extra long. From his discription it sounds a lot like the picture of jimmy reid but then again?

The first person he played upon arrival was said to be david sizemore and the locals lost their shorts and toupees betting on sizemore. After cleaning the locals the IrishTravelers called Barefoot from lumberton North Carolina.

The hippie wasted no time taking everything from the travelers and barefoot but barefoots shoes. Jacksonville Sam was called. Sam got slammed.

Billy Johnson was then called in but the hippie was unstoppable and beat Johnson for 20-25000 in 1972ish in an 8 ahead game. After seeing this monster, stakehorses Candyman and Bucket took the hippie on the road and as remembered the Hip beat everyone.

He was a player tearing up the road. . The hippie stayed in Augusta for about a year and a half in and out on the road with his backers.

It was stated that at the end of his stay billy johnson came back and bested the hippie but the hips game seemed to have slipped.

It was said this area was known as a place that had gamble in the 70's. Like Keith Mc. stated, they were looking for a good game not a lock.

The greatest pool players in the land, came and crossed cues with pool warriors. May the REAL Augusta hippie be in a happy place because you brought action and memories that still today make smiles when recalling.

That is what being alive is about. I think that is what Keith and the guys of that era are really trying to say. It was exciting. They felt alive. Jmop

The Augusta Hippie was indeed Toby Sweet; and most of the stories you quote here are quite true! By the way, $25,000 in 1972 is equivalent to $153,000 today!
