i have a joss cue and am looking to buy a jacoby cue. i was just wondering from people who have shot with both how do they compare? thanks

real close if the build is the same...ie joint type, ferrule type etc. I have had both, liked them both just fine, but I feel the Jacoby might hold it's value better.

Jacobys a better cue. Jacoby makes a lot of custom cues that have sharp point which is a big plus. Joss cues Just seem like the inlays are super round and big. Joss shafts are thick to usally well over 13 mm so they dont usally play as well imo. Joss butt's are kinda thick to. Jacoby butt is a little thiner which is more comfortable IMO. Jacoby is realy easy to work with on any cue getting it customized to your liking as joss is pretty much standard catolog cue. Both cues have a stiff hitt usally.Joss you can get a metel joint or a radial pin. Jacoby cues you can order any type of joint ya like. Jacoby cues are more of a custom cue than a production cue like a joss and there fore should hold there resale a little better if that's a concern.:) :)

I'll take Jacoby

Just a preference really. Both make a good cue. I had a Joss in the past and like my Jacoby MUCH better.

There is very little difference to me. They are both top brands and you can't go wrong with either of them. It's all personal preference.

thanks for the replies. been in a slump lately and i am going to blame the arrow :D

Jacoby ... with a Wood to Wood Joint ......

The big PLUS with a Jacoby is when you order it with a 3/8x10 or Radial Pin Joint ... That way, you get the wood-to-wood hit, which you will not get in any Joss Cue ... and, as mentioned above, the Jacoby will hold it's value much better ...
I have been good friends with Dave Jacoby for many years and he backs his cues 100% for any imperfections in materials and workmanship ... I wish the same were true of Dale Perry ... He offers NO GUARANTEE What-so-ever ...

I have shot with Joss...

and I own 3 Jacobys ! :) of course pool cues are a personal preference but Jacoby IMO is far better playing both in hit and play ! just make sure you get the wood to wood joint!

If you want something other than what is standard on a Joss Ask Dan Janes, Joss cues can be had that are truly custom.

I have also owned a Jacoby and I prefere Joss.

I think to be fair you need to try a Joss custom before you can compare a Jacoby to a production Joss. looks like a production Joss can hold its own no doubt, but Joss does offer much more.

P.S. you can also get a Joss shaft in 13.25-12.5mm all you need to do is ask.

I used to play with Joss...owned 4 over a period of about 10 years then about 3 years ago I bought a Jacoby. The Jacoby is simply a much beter cue as far as fit, finish and quality of wood goes. The hit is very similar but IMO the Jacoby is much more controlable on the soft to medium shots. Its a great cue and whish I had known before and I wouldnt have "wasted" all those years playing with a Joss.It might not get you out of youre slump but it will give you somthing nice to look at after you miss and are waiting to get up again.

Good point about the pins. I personally prefer a radial pin joint but have a couple cues with 3/8-10 pins. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose Jacoby but Joss does make a good production cue also. You should choose the one that YOU like. It's more of a personal preference.

I Totally Agree ....

Excellent Point ... I believe (in most cases) that owning and playing with a Cue that you Truly like will assist in improving you game, if only mentally ... For me, and most of my friends, our Custom Cues are an extension of our Personality ... Every time I show up at the Jointed Cue or Hard Times, the guys gather 'round to see what's new in my Cue Case ...

The "rule-of-thumb" I employ whenever I purchase Goods or Services is this : Never buy anything you may have to make an excuse for at a later date ... Spend the money "up front" and you won't be sorry later ... You can still be "bitten" in the Ass, but your odds are better ...

Enjoy your New Joss or Jacoby ... You can't "miss" with either of them ... Ha !!!!

While I agree the Jacoby I purchased was of good quality, I had a problem with the shaft, it was yellowish and wasnt straight, I did contact Davie and he said he would replace the shaft, but I had to pay shipping, for both shafts. the cue was Jacoby# C8 I boought from billiardwarehouse
Considering the time it was going to take and the fact Greg told me I could use the try a cue guarentee. I went with a Fury RP-9

Im not saying Jacoby is bad Im just saying the shaft quality isnt that of Joss, at least not the one I purchased. The only reason I mention this is because someone mentioned something about wasted time with a Joss, Take some time and Talk to Dan, or any of the people at Joss, and buy your cue direct. This may be the best solution for buying a Jacoby as well. if it wasnt for the shaft, Id still have my Jacoby it was really nice and well made.

I prefer joss's 5/16x14 steel joint to any out there including Jacoby. It has a harder hit and is less mushy than a wood to wood joint. The only wood to wood joint I like is joss's with the 5/16x14 although it too feels somewhat mushy compared to the steel joint. BTW I use Predator shafts on all my cues so it's all in how the butts feel. I currently use a Predator 99-5 but the Joss my friend had a few years ago was a close second.

With total prejudice, I can say that Cindy & I both like our J-2 Jacoby cues. Plain janes, hers is all maple, mine cocobolo...no inlays on either.
Question: Does Joss still engrave a serial number on the joint? This feature, I like...Frankly, I've never actually played with a Joss, only swapped cues with a friend who has one for a few practice hits. Not enough time to really tell a difference. I think both cue brands are good...

My .02

I know Dan and David, they are boh very nice people. I believe Dan has been building cues longer. I also know that Dan worked with Bill Stroud and Tim Scruggs when he first started out. That is some credentials in my book. You also can not compare Joss production cues to Custom Jacoby cues. Dan makes some fine custom cues also. Jacoby makes a nice playing cue. I have played with a few of them. My advice would be to get your hands on both of them, hit a few balls and make up your own mind. You shouldn't ask people to choose between cuemakers cues. There are many biases and opinions out there.
